Miscellany Toronto Photographs: Then and Now

The 100th Anniversary of the Masons in Ontario

I saw the 'symbol' and although it looks familiar, I can't name it.
Is it a union crest?

Goldie, you & I posted at the same time so you missed my answer
- the Masons - the 100th Anniversary of the Grand Lodge of Ontario

Thanks for the discovery, Anna.
It would appear that they also removed their 'aprons' (as well as jackets) before sitting down for the meal.

Auto Show c.1950

That CNE Automotive Building series was incomplete without a shot of an actual "Auto Show."
Couldn't find much on the net, so here's my own photo c.1950 (can anyone give a more accurate date?).
Shot with a new 35 mm Retina camera - very blurred! - not very good for a budding photographer, eh?

A beautiful structure!

I'm surprised they let the ivy grow like that. I was told it's destructive to grout. Looks nice, and I'd like that up my house to keep it cool in the summer, but it's destructive.

Auto shows in the 50s... wonder what the slogans were?

"Through the windshield with a smile
'Cause you're doing it in style!
In your 1955 _______!"

"Roll it, flip it, ram a pole,
That you don't live to sue's the goal!
We just hope that your kids survive
To buy our cars in '65!"

"The gypsy used her crystal ball
To see a future, proud and tall
Where you cruise highways, faster, straighter
...But who the heck is... Ralph Nader?"

Does anyone remember when seat belts were for the front seats only, then grudgingly, the belts in car backseats were lap only (like on aircraft)?

Then and Now for Jan 19.

Then. Bank of Montreal Branch. Cherry and Villier streets. SE corner. c1921. By rights this gem shouldn't exist; amazing that it does.

Well, going into the early 70s, even front belts were commonly lap-only...
