Didn't someone above say that the 905 systems are more expensive with credit/debit than a Presto card?

Yes some 905 systems charges a pretty big difference, the GO is the exact same fare though. Sounds like it’s something the transit service can set themselves and unrelated to Presto as a system. From previous comments it sounds like TTC really wants open payment (heck, they wanted it even before Presto) so maybe they’ll keep the prices the same

YRT charges adult cash fare (4.25) for contactless, while Presto adult cash fare is 3.88, so in some cases it can be a pretty big difference, especially considering cheaper fare types such as youth (3.03) or senior/child (2.40) on Presto.

Yesterday I was trying to ride a GO bus from Union and paying with Google Pay (linked to a credit card) and it did not work, nor did a regular credit card work, the driver told me to just come on and ride for free. Was a bit surprised as I had used this many times in the past, the majority of users using regular Presto had no issue. I seldom ride so it's easier than loading an actual Presto card.

They already jumped the gun at Presto and updated the website

On August 15 you'll be able to pay your TTC fare with a contactless credit or debit card, including in a mobile wallet. Some PRESTO devices will accept PRESTO contactless earlier, but it will be available across the whole TTC on August 15.

In the fare table, TTC contactless will be billed as “Adult PRESTO Fare”! For the people not on a concession or monthly pass, one less card to carry around!

Oh, and how will transfers be handled? Will Presto machines know not to charge the same debit or credit card within 2 hours of the last tap?

Transfers will be fine - and Presto isn't going away. Debit/credit/mobile wallet will only offer a single adult TTC fare at this time.

Therefore, until there's weekly/monthly fare capping, debit/credit/mobile wallet is useful for people who use the TTC on an irregular basis or a few times a week. It's also great for tourists and occasional riders who don't have to hunt down a Presto card or find it in some kitchen drawer or whatever. It's also useful for people who've left their Presto card at home! If anything, I see the debit/credit/mobile wallet replacing 90% of use cases for the Presto ticket.

Riders that want monthly/yearly passes, or student/senior riders who want discount fares - will use Presto. It's also 5 cents cheaper per ride - which adds up over a year! (turns out this is wrong) There's also plenty of people who don't have (or don't want to use) debit/credit cards to pay.

For low income riders - a Presto card will run out of money when you take your trips, whereas using debit/credit/mobile wallet you get charged the total fare amount at the end of the day. For some, this can be harder to keep track how much has been spent!

It will be interesting to see what % of TTC riders do move to contactless payment - Oyster in London had ten years to bed in, and paying by cash is substantially more expensive than using Oyster.

After 10 years of contactless in 2022, TfL's data says 60% of PAYG trips are paid with contactless payment, and 70% of bus trips. But when you include concessions (student/senior/disabled etc), season tickets and other passes to the PAYG data - contactless payment on TfL is around 42% of trips.
(that's even with contactless payment fare capping for week/month!)

they’re charging the adult presto fare, not the cash fare, so it won’t be more expensive.
