Metrolinx: Bombardier Flexity Freedom & Alstom Citadis Spirit LRVs

Actually, they could. They have the same track gauge, the same vehicle dimensions, and the same vehicle.

Each line has its own MSF, none of the LRT lines are connected to any other of the LRT lines. If Metrolinx wanted to move the trains, they'd need to be moved by freight to another MSF. So in theory, the LRVs could be moved to other lines, but in practice I expect it would be an extremely uncommon event. If a train or two were to be moved permanently, it's not a big deal to repaint them.

I don't think LRVs are going to move unless absolutely necessary. Each operator would have a contract to maintain them or for Toronto, it would be the TTC. If things go wrong such has extra high maintenance for bad maintenance from another operator, there would be a lot of finger pointing unless Queen's Park would pay whatever they quote them.

Eglinton LRVs would be the only line that actually needs ATO equipment. I don't think any other LRT lines will have ATO equipped LRVs. Moving LRVs to/from that line isn't as easy. BTW, doesn't the ATO computer need to be hosted in a cabinet? Wouldn't it take up some interior space unless they put it on the roof?

You do know that your smartphone is a million times more powerful than the computers on the Apollo spacecrafts. It's the peripherals, or the input/output connections, or wiring that one needs to be worried about.

Back in the 90's, a harddrive held only about 20 mg of data. You can get the same size today and it will hold up to 1oT of data.

If you watch Timeless, they just did an episode on Apollo 11 and it stated the speed was only 20mg using a bank of tape machines.

Computers are getting smaller and faster these day and will continue to do so over time. Even the batteries for electric buses/trams are getting lighter and smaller as well more powerful.

Even a smartwatch is more powerful than a room full of computers used to send Apollo 11 to the Moon!

Even when the battery is flat, it indicates the right time at least once a day, twice if you're using a 12 hour display setting. Oh...wait...the old wind-ups were the same.

Some things never improve...

New tweet from Bombardier rail announcing completion of Kingston Facility for LRV production. Also featured is an Orange LRV. This colour is new for renderings from Bombardier of the Flexity Freedom. TTC/Metrolinx's new Line 5 Eglinton Crosstown will be orange on the TTC map, so wondering if this is a coincidence, or a compromise between Metrolinx (green/grey) and the TTC (red) for a vehicle colour. A final LRV colour has yet to be announced. I think orange actually looks good and makes the Crosstown unique, while building an identity for the line.

Interesting—last week (I think) when the images of the grey scheme surfaced, Anne Marie Atkins wasn't able to say one way or another whether that was to be the final colour scheme (and a quick "no" would've been easy if grey was indeed the final answer).

Whether Bombardier is considered an errant child or not, this bodes well if we have to batten down the NAFTA hatches if Trump is able to make good his threats on leaving the agreement. It means that we can state "Cdn built only" as we have the ability to produce what's needed here. Meantime, CETA will allow the importation of parts from the EU to assemble here to keep costs and quality under control, while still being able to produce a unique 'Toronto" version as well as assemble off-the-shelf ones.
