Mayor John Tory's Toronto

The villainization of Miller is proof that baseless Right-wing propaganda works.

Not that I think Miller is a saint, all that effective as a mayor (his lieutenants are particularly mixed), much less being "the best" - I just tend not to take anyone who voted/defending voting for a dysfunctional narcissistic crackhead over anyone functional and adult seriously.

Also oddly enough, it didn't stop them from reaping the LTT benefits which Miller had spend political capital to implement.

Me, I'm still waiting for Toronto's first legitimately urbanist- and downtown-friendly Mayor.

Me too, but that would require de-amalgamation, which is sadly unlikely.

I'm more optimistic (at least in terms of the extent of structural limitations); what's required is a legitimately popular candidate with mass appeal (in a non-populist/lowest common denominator-seeking fashion) who runs a strong campaign and then doesn't care if she or he gets re-elected for a second term and operates as such.

A Sadiq Khan-type figure could do wonders here.

What's going to change it is the inevitable demographic turnover of the inner suburbs.

That too, though as far as the daily operations of Council go (in the frame of a weak Mayor system), I'm less optimistic that those changes will be quickly reflected in the type of people elected to Council in those areas, given the absence of ranked ballots and the other structural realities that contribute to the massive incumbency advantage (to go along with the fact that I generally think folks in Toronto aren't super engaged in municipal politics).

Will it, considering built form of those yellow-belt areas? It will be interesting to see how development of the avenues will change electoral makeup.

Also interesting, and we've already begun seeing this, that the demographics of downtown is slowly reflecting closer to midtown voters as 'yuppies' move into downtown condos.

If one has to blame anyone but themselves for voting in a crack-addicted illiterate no-show with a proven lack of talent for governance who also turned out to be the joke of the universe, the problem is the one casting the vote. It's like someone blaming Obama for Trump getting elected, instead of what, Fox News. You'd think the personal responsibility bunch would consider deciding and then stuffing a ballot box a matter of utmost personal responsibility, no?

And PS - Miller is hard left the way alcohol-free beer belong to LCBO. Seriously, FWIW labelling anything as hard-whatever is usually straight giveaway for partisan BS.

I think what I was saying is the Miller years really changed City Politics around how council is viewed by the rest of the city around fiscal policies.
The thing is electing Ford was a mistake but his populist messages around fiscal conservative mindset did change the pardigm of the the voters in that direction. Love or hate the man, he left a mark on city politics in that manner.

Well people like Smittermen and Chow who do not read those tea leaves, they were certain to lose.

Like it or not rougly 3/4 of the vote in the last election went for a centrist or centre right candidate in this city.

The only way a left wing socialist can win if Ford and Tory go to a war of attrition or attitudes in the city around fiscal policy shift dramatically.

I think they are but not in a way to let a far left candidate win easily.

The Ford years are the reason why a person like Tory got elected and is rather popular with voters.

To be fair, Tory came admirably close to that outcome in 2003. It's just that Miller had more momentum. (And really, if you remember that campaign--at least on a one-on-one basis, it was a collegial battle among equals, and either one would have been an improvement on what the Lastman regime had become. Meanwhile, the truest Lastman-Ford-axis populist, John Nunziata, was an also-ran.)

I used to listen to it after school, in the car and he came off very likeable.

So when he ran for Mayor a lot of people already had a person liking for him and his past as Tory leader become irelvant.

Which was the exact opposite whenever Doug and/or Rob Ford started talking. After 2 minutes, I had to switch stations or turn it off.
