Lamport Stadium Redevelopment

Just curious, but does any one know why York United want out of the Lions Stadium? The PanAm athletics track was torn out to make the stadium attractive to soccer teams.

They've consistently had the lowest/second lowest average attendances in the Canadian Premier League, usually between the 1 and 2k mark. The Wolfpack at Lamport showed how high the potential of a pro sports team located there can be with cheap tickets and a community feel.

Because it's a godawful location for professional sports. What that level of soccer needs is grassroots and community support and an empty university campus through the summer doesn't provide that.

As someone who lives DT and tries to go to more than two matches of theirs a year it's very difficult to commit the time when the matches are shorter than the amount of time I have to commit to transit to/from.

I don't know 100%, but as someone who has looked into their games, it's such a trek to get there (about 1 hr on TTC from just outside downtown) and there isn't anything around in the area to make it worth the outing.

There's an unsourced post on the CPL sub Reddit saying York United will unveil their new identity on November 27.

I wonder if that also means news about a Lamport renovation

Also @interchange42 can we move this to the buildings section rather than politics? Thank you.
The Star ran an article about this yesterday but quickly took it down.

They are for sure changing their name to Inter Toronto. There is no news on where they are planning to play. They have told season ticket holders they will be at York Lions Stadium in 2026 though. Maybe they announce tonight plans to reno Lamport and they move there in 2027?

This is the dead URL:

Edit: the article is back now. It is paywalled though

The team has had plans to build its own stadium since its very inception in 2018/2019. No real progress has been made that anyone outside the team is aware of. I'd be impressed if they were able to do either this or renovate Lamport but i'm not holding my breath at this point.

It mentions "long-term plans include building its own stadium", but I don't see anything about Lamport.
From a CP article that recently dropped:

The club ownership is also looking at upgrading Lamport Stadium, located just north of BMO Field, and making the 50-year-old venue its new home.

"We've been having very good conversations with the City of Toronto regarding Lamport," said Pasquel. "They want us playing there. From our end, we've spoken about investing in Lamport, renovating Lamport — not just for us but for the benefit of the community."

Infinitely greater chance of popularity and success playing at Lamport than up at York

Maybe they should rename them "Liberty FC" to really give it that neighbourhood vibe 😎

Dumb rebrand but Lamport is a great idea, and with fewer summer games for TFC there’s definitely a good opportunity to make this venture successful.
