Keir Starmer's United Kingdom

It's looking like a potential Kim Campbell-level disaster for the UK Conservatives.

I am not surprised in the least and quite frankly this will go down as one of the dumbest moves in UK politics.

After this, I don't think anyone will take Rishi Sunak seriously anymore and quite frankly they shouldn't. You know it is bad when your own party asks what he was thinking when he called the election.

In other news though, I suspect this may be good for the UK. I can see Labour trying to forge closer ties to the EU while working to fix things with the London Underground (via financial assistance).

My British homeland is a mess. The Brexit vote was so poorly designed. When something is as pivotal to the national direction, I would have made it as follows:

1) First and foremost, a realistic Exit plan and summary of Post-EU UK must be presented
2) Every adult citizen must legally vote. (made easily though secure online/mobile app)
3) Youth aged 16-18 are also allowed to vote - it's their future on the line.
4) The vote will be decided on a 2/3 rule

Interesting that the Labour majority prediction is running counter-cyclical to the current conservative trends in Continental Europe and North America, which I think is due to the length of the Conservative government and that the desire to punish the Conservatives is overriding apprehension about a Labour government.

As I said before- betrayal of the electorate and the original mandate has lead to this. Hopefully the Conservatives will go the way of the Whigs and new Conservative parties will replace it.

My gut tells me that the UK Conservatives will be below 100 seats on July 5th.

If Labour goes into Supermajority territory, I can see there being a push to rejoin the EU.

The new far right governments in France(?), Italy, Hungary and others may not want to take a newly socialist-led Britain back.

A lot of wishful thinking here.

Labour has expressly said they will not enter talks to bring Britain back into the E-U is elected this term.

Have you ever seen a politician who is 100% honest prior to an election?

Politics only works when you speak out your ass to get yourself elected. You don't have to be honest, you just have to tell people what they want to hear.

This is a different level of policy decision.

Its not a modest tax hike, its a big international affairs move.

IF the E-U agreed to take them back after a messy divorce that only concluded about a year ago and has not worked out for the UK, I would presume the terms would be tougher than what they were the last time.

Likely deeper integration ever.

I'm not clear that the UK public are yet ready to support that. I think you might get a majority for a return to the E-U, but while immigration is a white hot issue in the U.K, with Labour tacking to the right of the governing Conservatives..... It hardly lends itself to being thought of as a likely near-term play.

There is also no guarantee that the situation in the UK will improve upon rejoining. In any case, the emergent European consensus is a stricter migrant regime - so I don't think that would be a show-stopper if it had come to that.

Many Britons also want a stricter migrant regime, and the EU membership may welcome the British model of exiling any unwelcome arrivals. It will be interesting if the new Labour government cancels the Rwanda deal, like they've promised.
