1. "this bus is not moving until you pay the fare." this one always gets me, and it's quite common too. it usually happens to riders with a mental disability. all i can say is be patient. there's no need to play childish here. continue what you are doing and eventually the rider will pay, if not, then wait until he/she is about to get off. then ask them nicely again. for other that do not have a disability, then it is really up to you. if you think it has been smooth sailing up until now by not paying the fare, then when you get caught one day, don't complain.

TTC management does undercover inspections and severely disciplines drivers who do not collect a full fare from everyone. I think not being a hardass about fares is one of the actual fireable offences at the TTC.

Actually I would prefer TTC staff to be more hardass about everything - littering, rude behaviour, fare evasion, scratchitti, etc. Respect is a two way street and it is patently evident that a substantial portion of the riders are engaging in beahviour that is costly to the TTC. Just think how much replacing a panel of scratched glass cost in materials and labour, for example.

+1

I think most people would be more supportive if they were less tolerant of this stuff. But then that would involve operators actually working to enforce the rules.

To be fair, most of it happens away from the eyes of TTC workers - as riders, we should ask ourselves what have we done about these issues? For all the whining, I can bet you 90% of the time the answer/look is - it's not my job. It isn't, but it affects you - so why don't you also get off your ass and do something about it? IF riders themselves don't take ownership, why should we expect anyone else to?

I, for one, usually speak up, be it in Ottawa or Toronto when I see crap like that....unless the perp is significantly bigger than me!

I hate littering with a passion. I've pulled over, retrieved garbage from a littering invidual, gone back to their car and returned their trash.

3. drunk riders on transit systems. this is a tough one. riders, be patient. i know it can get annoying sometimes, but if you really feel uncomfortable, then get off at the next station, and catch another train. or switch to another train. just don't make it obvious though.

Sorry, why would I bother not to make it obvious. I have a right to take any train while on the system, don't care what others think of it.

Wait, is this for real or are we so weak minded we believe whatever the media publishes? I haven't heard from any credible sources a work to rule was happening. I can see how H.G. Wells War of the Worlds on the radio caused people to panic. Dont believe everything you read from the trolls at CP24/TorStar.

There was at least one report of a driver going over every single fare with a fine-toothed comb today (as opposed to other days). Maybe they should be though, given the chronic funding shortages. ;)

Plus it is interesting to note that the union didn't actually deny there was talk of this. They just denied that it was sanctioned by them.

There's various comments from all over the place. Some operators over at trashtalktheTTC said that they stopped allowing pre-boarding at some stations today. I don't think that the public has quite noticed yet though.

thats what i was trying to say. if it doesnt concern you, then dun worry about it, but if one day a drunk rider pukes on you or starts to pick fights with you, then don't complain. and yes u do have the right to take any train u want, no doubt about that. just think about this, what if you were drunk and u were acting crazy and all, how would other riders feel?

Well I never get drunk to the point of annoying other people.

In the hypothetical case I do just that, other riders have a right to protection against me, by calling police or TTC employees ... at the very least, other riders can leave the train if they don't want to share it with me. They do not have to pretend that they don't mind my activities.

i agree with what u said, but u kno what, not everyone thinks the way u and i do. some people feel annoyed, other's will try to attempt to call for help, and some just does not want to get involved, so they walk away.

Is this true? I head this policy was thrown out a few years ago, and drivers do not have to enforce it. Which I consider a good thing, because drivers are not equipped to fight with riders, and it is a disservice to all other passengers.

Unions: wholly anachronistic and unecessary in today's Canada.

You can't compare all unions in canada to the useless TTC union. in some industries unions are needed more now than ever sadly.
