So what are we getting when all is said and done in 2016 or so? More glass would make the place less dire.

We are getting the roof as it was built, not as it was designed. But without the 80 years of gunk built-up on the surfaces.

Are there any good photos from the 1920s? Can't imagine it took long to build up gunk with all the steam locomotives.

The City of Toronto is issuing this news release in English and French.

TORONTO - A little over a year since the media toured the excavation and column work underway at Toronto's Union Station as part of a major revitalization, the City of Toronto invites journalists back to see the progress on construction, including the first poured slabs for the new concourse. The pouring of the slabs is an exciting milestone in the project as the new concourse begins to take shape.

John Carmichael, Member of Parliament for Don Valley West, Soo Wong, Member of Provincial Parliament for Scarborough-Agincourt, and Councillor Denzil Minnan-Wong (Ward 34, Don Valley East), and Chair of the Public Works and Infrastructure Committee, City of Toronto, will join the media tour.

Date: Friday, October 12
Time: 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. (Please arrive by 8:45 a.m.)
Location: Union Station, 65 Front Street West, Toronto
Directions: Enter through the Great Hall and wait by the clock for a representative.
Note: Members of the media are required to pre-register by sending an email to nkuyumc@toronto.ca.

Media should bring their own safety footwear. As this is a construction site, appropriate clothing is required. Hard hats, vests, goggles and gloves will be provided. The use of tripods, cabling, external lighting and shore power are prohibited in some areas of Union Station.

Next set (8) of columns went up today on platform 12/13. There is currently a total of 32 columns altogether (out of 48).

Not moving very quickly with the preparation for the green roof, just that one strip completed months ago. Perhaps just for testing purposes?

The Auditor General's report is forecasting that the shed replacement could be two years behind schedule and 25% over budget. "As of August 2012, change orders totalling $18.1 million had been issued to the contractor. Most of this amount was requested by the contractor to cover any additional overheads caused by extending the project completion date by another two years." How ironic that a few months after Metrolinx was criticizing the TTC for issuing cost-plus contracts instead of AFPs, it turns out they are doing the very same thing down at Union Station.

I took these pics a little over a week ago taking the GO train out from Union at night. iPhone shots, so not the greatest, but the construction is marching inward.
