Because the thing which makes the Toronto skyline is the CN Tower...and the thing that makes the CN Tower, is that it's much taller
than anything within a few blocks.

The casino towers look like they'll basically obscure the tower up to the observation deck, as seen from the city-side (as opposed to from the shoreline).

Ultimately the tower's iconic role on the skyline will be diminished, and Toronto will look like a homogenous mass of tall buildings.


There should be a perimeter rule around the Tower....IMHO...or at least nothing taller than the Ritz.

Actually, you're right. now that you mention it, I read somewhere that city council would never allow a proposal that tall next to the CN tower......yeah, right. I'd love to see them built, especially the supertalls, but not if it's going to obscure the views from the lower pod. I won't get too excited either way, since when do towers look the same as their original proposals? I can't see city hall ever approving something that will block our signature tower, I always pictured our first supertall being built more up town, as not to obscure the tower, but to add to our ever changing skyline.
 
As a side note, it's almost unbelievable as to how fast our skyline changes. I very dear friend from NY, NY was here a few weeks ago on business, he said he was completely shocked, he couldn't believe it was the same city. Usually, he flies here once a year on business, but hadn't been here for two years. I took him on a brief tour of our current construction sites, he was in total awe. He joked that we're trying to catch up to NY (we have a very, very long way to go to do that, maybe Chicago!?). He fell in love with the L Tower and Aura (he's actually wanting to buy a few units for investment, lucky guy is loaded). He took a ton of photos, when he got home, he showed them to his friends, he said none of them believed that it was Toronto as most of his pics didn't include our trade mark, the CN Tower. He laughed that his friends were so ignorant, they actually thought it was Chicago or Philly, not even close........just trying to demonstrate just how fast our look has changed for the better. I showed him our Skyscraper page, he was floored at the number and size of current sites and proposals. He, and his friends, were so impressed, he's considering setting up shop here (he owns and runs an X Ray clinic in Manhattan). I guess we (Toronto) are making quite the impression, living here, I suppose although we notice it, we just take it for granted, what do you think? (Go easy on John, my friend, he's led a very sheltered life!lol!) :cool:
 
They should make a new Toronto icon to overtake the CN tower, and all height rules should be abolished. Also why does the skyline need to look like a mountain, with FCP as the peak? Why would the business district need to be the tallest? Lame I tell you.

First, that's totally unrealistic, nothing will top the CN Tower for a very long time, there's just no oil billionaires here to fork out the money to build it, like in Dubai. Secondly, most people, city council included, want to create an aestheticly pleasing skyline, not one with huge towers scattered helter skelter with huge gaps inbetween, it just looks nicer, and is a more effective use of the land, that, and most tall towers are built on the subway line to increase accessibility. :)

Even though we'll probably never look like new york or chicago it's good to know we still have ambition, our city WANTS to be world class even if we aren't which is a good thing imo. One issue I have though is our previous approach to becoming world class, we thought that by building a big concrete tower and setting some records we would make it there, but now those height records are gone and we're left with a pretty ostentatious monolith (i'll admit it looks great at night though with the light show). Our new approach should be less about setting records and more about creating the best quality of life possible and the best cultural experience possible. Our new additions like shangri-la and the four seasons help in that regard, as would the mirvish towers and the casino imo. A permanent cirque du soleil with the casino would help as well.

Seriously, this and steveve's Toronto model are some of my favourite threads to watch and are among probably only 2 or 3 on the multitude of sites I browse where I actually get supremely excited to see an update.
 
trust me, I love having the model myself. I will often spend 10-20 minutes just spinning around the skyline, looking at what it will look like in the future. and I get excited every time i go in and change the color of buildings to another colour, as they are advancing in the construction process. I have unfortunately deleted a couple of buildings as well, but only small projects that have been stale proposals for a while now. (exept tux, which failed)

This model has actually landed me a summer job as well. when I got featured on a Canadian Business blog, several people contacted me asking me to do work for them. I ended up with getting an offer to work downtown over the summer.. quite exciting for someone still in high school!
