Florida Gun Law

Florida now has a law on their books that says if a person who is not engaged in unlawful activity and who is attacked in any other place where he or she has a right to be can use deadly force without first trying to flee. Ie it's legal to shoot someone because you felt threated.

I keep trying not to hate Americans, really, I do. I try not to be a reflexively US hating Canadian. And there is much to admire about the country and its people. But frankly, sometimes, I just want them all to shoot each other.

Florida's probably one of the places Canadian's are most familiar with too.

NE US/New England and parts of California are the only decent places. I wish we could annex them and rename the rest Cletus-land.

don't forget miami...or chicago or seattle...but yeah, most of florida majorly sucks. i have relatives up and down the east coast of the state, all lovely folks, but visiting them is just so dreary (the sun is sort of cancelled out by the big-boxes and 8-lane arterials).

also, ever been to tampa? my nominee for worst city in america.

Tampa is the Lagos of America.

The areas mentioned above, and some other urban pockets, a few college towns like Ann Arbor or Boulder or Austin - Hawaii too? We'll take them, give them Alberta, the shitty parts of Sask and BC, whatever part of Quebec Celine Dion and call it even.

I don't mind half of the US: As I start thinking about it, I like New England, New York City and State, just about the entire West Coast, and I think some of the northern Midwest states, like parts of Michigan (though it has some kooks starting north of Flint), Minnesota, Wisconsin, and some cities like Chicago.

I loved New York City, and I like Detroit/Ann Arbor, and I really would like to check out Chicago, more of New England and the West Coast.

However, I hated much of Florida (when I went I was old enough to understand the place beyond the theme parks, and my aunt lived in Palm Beach County for some time), and I hated Las Vegas, the city (the casinos are neat to see though). The worst "urban" centre I have ever been to, and I've been to Detroit.

What's the problem? They're still not allowed to shoot anyone unless they're in imminent danger of grievous bodily harm, or death.

The only change now is that they don't have to try to run away first. If the situation is that bad already, running away could very well get you shot in the back.

Anything that would mean more gunshot wounds in the ER cannot be a good thing.

Ah fult 'fraid, suh shod'em in uh back.

"What's the problem?"

Some us believe that civil society can actually operate without side arms.

It says that if you are attacked you have the right to fight back with the use of deadly force in the form of a gun. Seeing as they already allow guns and allow deadly force in self-defence I don't see how it changes things much. I doesn't say above that you can use deadly force because you felt afraid.

In Canada if you are attacked and you kill someone in self defence without using a gun what is the rule?

The law in Canada and the US is pretty much the same, with the exceptions that in Canada there is a duty to retreat if possible, and Canadian law also includes a duty to protect people under your care.

ie if someone tries to rape your wife, and you can run away while she can't, you're allowed to kill them without retreating first. If you use a gun, you'd probably have a lot of questions on how you were able to unlock the weapon from secure storage, load it and remove the trigger lock in time to actually be of help, but you wouldn't be prosecuted for shooting the guy.

Your scenario could also be an argument for chastity belts as well as guns. There is no evidence that the availability of hand guns reduces rape, or any other crime.

Faulty reasoning and propaganda techniques include:

Card stacking: which is the arranging of facts or information in order to create a specific outcome.

Selection: which is choosing only the facts that alone are used to support an argument or position.

Selective emphasis: which is inflating the proportion of given facts or providing special placement for information aimed at over-emphasizing a position or argument.

Not to mention the selective use of emotional imagery, or false dilemmas (have a gun and your wife won't get raped, have unrestricted gun laws, and she won't).
