Downtown Baltimore video. T.O. needs something like this.

Re: Downtown Baltimore video. T.O. needs something like this

i travel to baltimore regularly for work and trust me, toronto doesn't want to be emulating baltimore! 2 or 3 blocks from the inner harbor and your highly likely to be parting with your wallet or worse. fell's point is an interesting area though, lots of history and starting to gentrify

Re: Downtown Baltimore video. T.O. needs something like this

We should emulate Baltimore? :rollin

Re: Downtown Baltimore video. T.O. needs something like this

Well, TBH, when it comes to waterfront redevelopment, Baltimore *has* been commonly upheld as an exemplar, at least in a 70s/80s context. Likewise w/Camden Yard viz. stadium development in the 90s. And given our history of grousing over our own waterfront and Skydome, y'know--they did well. At least, considering.

Shame about most of the rest of the city, though--if not without trying. And in that context, maybe haphazard Toronto had the last laugh--that is, even the bleak concrete environs of the Harbour Castle ferry terminal might well feel less strained and macabre than Baltimore Harbour these days. (But that's with broader factors accounted for. And in 2006, "ain't that America"...)

Re: Downtown Baltimore video. T.O. needs something like this

You guys are missing the point. Its not that Baltimore is better then T.O.

Its that Baltimore is better at marketing.

Balitmore understands that they have to educate the public about how important the downtown and city are to the region, etc.

Toronto does nothing like that. We just continue to let business flee, etc.

We don't market the downtown or city much at all, to our region. We don't make videos like Baltimore has, to educate suburban residents on why downtown is important, etc.

We do nothing.

Thats where we could learn from Baltimore.

Re: Downtown Baltimore video. T.O. needs something like this

Yawn.

I find these threads infuriating to be honest. The same arguments on both sides get trotted out, the same rebuttals are used ad nuseum.

Mike fails to understand points made my other forum members, namely that Toronto and Phili, Baltimore or [insert some other rust belt city] face different challenges. While other's fail to see the value, albeit limited, of Mike's unfortunately poorly presented arguments.

Let's agree to disagree on this subject, can we stop the madness of similar threads? We aren't moving anywhere...

Here here pw20. I, like many it seems, hae learned to simply ignore these threads, but there will always be new members who will get lured into the endless loop of repeated arguments. Just like bad television (which is most television), ignoring this nonsense is rather easy to do.

Now if I can only locate the flowchart on my hard drive...

Re: Downtown Baltimore video. T.O. needs something like this

He's suggesting that Toronto produce some kind of promotional video. Is that so wrong?

Re: Downtown Baltimore video. T.O. needs something like this

When was the last time Baltimore had full page ads back to back to back weekends in the times (regardless of wether you like them or not)? When was their last Olympic bid? You fear so many business' leaving TO for the burbs yet you never take off your blinders in regards to other types of marketing. I certainly do not see Missassauga or Brampton or Ajax or Markham attracting the worlds attention when it comes to tourism; and I can bet you all those tourist aren't going to Scarberia or Etobicoke when they come here.

They are going downtown.

Toronto need to do this
Toronto needs to do that

I am on the same page as pw20 on this on.

No, but producing a video is not the end of things. Who are you trying to expose it to, why, and how do you get it to them all come next. The video is actually the easy part.

It would be like me saying:

Toronto needs a song, 'cause maybe another city has a song.
Toronto needs a mascot, 'cause other cities might have mascots.
Toronto needs an official food, 'cause other cities might have official foods.

And so on...

Re: Downtown Baltimore video. T.O. needs something like this

But what about....

Toronto needs a Gehry building because other cities have one...
Toronto needs a W Hotel because other cities have one...
Toronto needs an Aquarium because Atlanta has one...

And so on....

Everyone has a wishlist of what they would like to see the city have or do. There is nothing wrong with that, just as there is nothing wrong with Mike wanting a promotional video or for Toronto to rule the GTA or for an express bus from his front step to downtown (or wherever he needs to be that day). Everybody wants something different. The problem is that the same ideas are repeated over and over without any new thought being put into them, wording that is almost exactly the same from post to post, and an inability to listen to what other people have to say and stubbornly believing what you say is the final word on the subject. That is what is frustrating more than anything (the ideas themselves are fine and would make for good discussion if it was discussed in an open minded and intelligent manner).

Re: Downtown Baltimore video. T.O. needs something like this

^So what you are potentially suggesting a truly unique mascot that eats a specific Toronto-esque food, relaxes by swimming in the Aquarium and lives in a landmark Gehry building. The mascot would make its living by handing out unique, eye-catching promotional materials for the city. If this is so, I like the idea.

Re: Downtown Baltimore video. T.O. needs something like this

^ You forgot that it meets friends for drinks at W hotel, greats tourists at Dundas Square, shops at Sharper Image and the Pottery Barn and his vice is gambling at the waterfront casino.
