700 Club's Pat Robertson: Decapitate Chavez

Robertson: Assassinate Venezuela's president

August 23, 2005

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- Religious broadcaster Pat Robertson called Monday for the assassination of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, calling him a ''terrific danger'' to the United States.

Robertson, founder of the Christian Coalition of America and a former presidential candidate, said on ''The 700 Club'' it was the United States' duty to stop Chavez from making Venezuela a ''launching pad for communist infiltration and Muslim extremism.''

Chavez has emerged as one of the most outspoken critics of President Bush, accusing the United States of conspiring to topple his government and possibly backing plots to assassinate him. U.S. officials have called the accusations ridiculous.

''You know, I don't know about this doctrine of assassination, but if he thinks we're trying to assassinate him, I think that we really ought to go ahead and do it,'' Robertson said. ''It's a whole lot cheaper than starting a war . . . and I don't think any oil shipments will stop.''

5th-largest oil supplier

Electronic pages and a message to a Robertson spokeswoman were not immediately returned Monday evening.

Venezuela is the fifth-largest oil exporter and a major supplier of oil to the United States. The CIA estimates that U.S. markets absorb almost 59 percent of Venezuela's total exports.

Venezuela's government has demanded in the past that the United States crack down on Cuban and Venezuelan ''terrorists'' in Florida who they say are conspiring against Chavez.

Robertson accused the United States of failing to act when Chavez was briefly overthrown in 2002.

''We don't need another $200 billion war to get rid of one, you know, strong-arm dictator,'' he continued. ''It's a whole lot easier to have some of the covert operatives do the job and then get it over with.''

What a psycho. No doubt a card carrying member of the American Taliban.

Will American Christians become upset if one of their leaders is lectured on promoting murder by an Islamic religious leader?

Does the 700 Club still air on Fox 28 on weekday mornings?

This Robertson quote had me in stiches when I first read it: "Feminism is a socialist, anti-family, political movement that encourages women to leave their husbands, kill their children, practice witchcraft, destroy capitalism and become lesbians." :lol

Just goes to show you religious nuts are religious nuts no matter the religion.

"He said war was too important to be left to the generals. When he said that, 50 years ago, he might have been right. But today, war is too important to be left to politicians. They have neither the time, the training, nor the inclination for strategic thought. I can no longer sit back and allow Communist infiltration, Communist indoctrination, Communist subversion and the international Communist conspiracy to sap and impurify all of our precious bodily fluids."

it's amazing how religion is used as a tool.

beware of the telemarketers.

correct me if i'm wrong but jesus turned water into wine right? i'm pretty sure it wasn't blood into oil.

Wow. I'd only ever heard this guy a few times and he seemed nice enough...didn't know he was such a nut.

I love this quote. It's pure right wing-nut twisted Christian Americana.

bizorky:

Well, I suppose lesbianism started with the Suffarage movement then! :lol Gawd forbid a woman should vote, the next thing you know, they'd all turn into "dykes on bikes"!

You guys are so harsh on Patsy. I think what he meant to say is "It's important to bring freedom, democracy and market economics to liberate the Columbian people".

Geeky,

I had heard that Pat's wife was preggo before they were married. I guess Pat would qualify himself as an "over-exuberant hetero family man bent on producing consumers with a good Christian girl who was not yet his wife." I guess Pat was always a little "libertated."

Nice how he managed to mix communists and muslim extremists all in one pot. Speaking of, Pat didn't add on how Chavez followers could be a danger as "dope smoking fanatical muslim communists bent on converting women to child killing lesbianism who then murder their husbands all in the name of denying Americans Christianity, oil and free markets."

Anyone with even a passing interest in Chavez, Venezuela, or international politics should check out the amazing documentary, "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised". From allmovie.com:

"Taking its title from a poem/song by Gil Scott-Heron, The Revolution Will Not Be Televised is an award-winning international documentary. Irish filmmakers Kim Bartley and Donnacha O'Briain went to Venezuela to make a documentary about the charismatic, democratically elected president, Hugo Chavez. Very popular with the Venezuelan people, Chavez is a firm supporter of socialism and a redistribution of wealth from the oil profits in his country. He's also an outspoken opponent of the Bush administration's tactics in Afghanistan. In April 2002, the filmmakers ended up witnessing the failed coup that took place when a group of oil-interested parties tried to remove Chavez from office. Pedro Carmona was supposed to be installed as the new leader. However, due to the loyalty of his people, Chavez was back in power in 48 hours. While the state-controlled media (Channel 8 in Venezuela) gave the president a call-in show to talk with the public, privatized media outlets reported that pro-Chavez supporters had fired on an anti-Chavez march. After making its U.S. premiere at the 2003 South by Southwest Film Festival, The Revolution Will Not Be Televised (also known as Chavez: Inside the Coup) has aired around the world on the RTE, BBC, and CBC."

No matter what your opinion of Chavez, this doc is a must-see. It is heavily biased in favour of Chavez, but don't let that put you off if you disagree: what is captured on video in this movie is simply extraordinary by any standard. I don't believe I've ever seen a visual record of the internal mechanics of an attempted coup d'etat anywhere else, which makes this doc a priceless and probably unique historical document. It is sometimes hard to believe that what you're seeing was allowed to be shot - this is literally history in the making, right before your eyes. Rent it immediately.
