2024 United States presidential election

The mere presence of a Donald Trump vying and lying for the Presidency, shows how far the vaunted Republic has fallen. Half of the American public wonder what the hell is going on.
But tens of millions are actually still living that dream. That's the issue here. You don't get this until you go there and see it. Places like L.A., Las Vegas, Scottsdale, Long Island, southern New Jersey, Miami, or even Washington D.C and Northern Virginia where you pass literally hundreds of thousands of newly built single-family homes in sprawling old school suburbs. The wealth they have that they demand to be protected from changes in taxation is unfathomable. It's not billions, it's trillions.

A lot of Canadians really still can't comprehend the scope of wealth in the US. There are millions of millionaires. A million dollars isn't even considered rich anymore.

If you don't have a million dollars in the bank/401k/RSP (or equivalent in DB pension) and your mortgage paid off by the time you retire I think you're pickled in either country.

Google search says there are 2 million millionaires in Canada. So, it makes sense for there to me millions of them in the USA.

I think if you feed a lot of sugar, the outcome is predictable. The society you describe mirrors a well-known, and growing, malady.

Nikki Haley would have smoked Harris. Especially if she chose a non-MAGA running mate like Paul Ryan (WI-retired), Bill Cassidy (LA) or Todd Young (IN).

I expect Haley to come out swinging in 2028 as the sane and safe change GOP candidate after eight years of Democrats in the White House.
Nikki emphatically endorsed Trump. She's anything but safe or sane.

I don't wish to side track the thread too much, but in light of the discussion of wealth, 3 versions of the same data.

Countries of the World ranked by wealth per capita. First, using median wealth: * note all numbers in U.S. Dollars

Now in Mean (average) wealth:

Interesting to note Canada stays in 11th spot across both versions, but the U.S. jumps from 15th (median) to 3rd (mean), this indicates much more wealth concentrated at the top.

Looking at Gini Coefficients (rates of inequality, the numbers in the list above don't match typical data, so I'm overlooking that. Exact rankings vary.........but of note.

Canada ranks somewhere around 23rd most equal society in the world with a Gini of 31'ish. Slovakia currently does best here (most equal society) with a Gini of 24.

The U.S. currently ranks 131st, with a Gini of 41'ish.

None of that is to diminish to the U.S. or suggest Canada doesn't have room for improvement in median and mean wealth per capita, as well as using Gini scoring. It does (we do). Its merely grist for the mill.

Yep. Just the state of California alone has 186 billionaires living there. More than all of Canada put together! It's insane, I have been to LA . You got homes selling from 10 to 100+ million within a 20 minute drive from skid row.

Las Vegas's housing booming is all thanks to California being so expensive. Even the "poor" millionaires can't afford LA or San Diego, Palm Springs..etc. So they are building mansions in Vegas, Texas, Arizona

Yes, a wolf in sheep's clothing. She was publicly attacked by Trump, yet still endorsed him.
Haley’s doing what she must to please MAGA so that she’s not disqualified in 2028.

As it is, Project 2025 and Dobbs has become an albatross to all the GOP races. I expect if the Dems take both Congress and White House that the GOP will distance itself from Project 2025 and the evangelicals behind Dobbs.

To be fair, California has a population similar to Canada, and is the capital of the global tech industry.

Leafs game on tonight at 7:00. Should be over around 9:45. I'm guessing no point in even watching any election night coverage until then.

I'm really disillusioned by politics in general, but especially by the US election, so I've kind of tuned out. What I am however very curious about is what chaos will ensue if Trump loses - he's already been putting the narrative in place about corrupt polling stations and whipping his supporters into a frenzy before the ballots have even been counted. It could get far uglier than Jan. 6th...

Here's my prediction for tonight. I think the ground shifted a bit these last few days. Also, the pollsters have been putting their thumb on the Trump vote to protect themselves from being so wrong again. My thinking at least is that the U.S. will have just averted a fascist. disaster.

May I know where your optimism stems from? That map indicates a blow out.
