Then and Now: Yonge/Dundas and area

In 90s I was told by someone who had been the head of Eatons College store security in the 70s that there was a huge maze of tunnels connecting all Eaton buildings ( in the early days there seems to have been quite a niumber). According to Tim all the tunnels were still there in the 90s but...

Miscellany Toronto Photographs: Then and Now

What a coincidence. When I opened the previous page to view the latest entries, I wondered if anyone has ever seen themselves or someone they knew in any a street photograp or post card. I then decided I would post that question after I viewed all the recent pics but lo and behold you answer...

My mom remembers these houses as ramshackle slums in the late 30s, early40s.

I love old elevators. I'll have to go and eyeball that one for sure. The former Public Storage building on College at Spadina has the oldest working freight elevator in the city. It's a beautiful old warehouse. I doubt very much of it will remain once it becomes a condo.

    Stucco Buildings

I am eternally grateful that I now know the correct term. I feel polluted for having played into the hands of those who manufacture this odious crap. I would like to suggest to those who also loathe this finish, to refer to it as foam, always.

Miscellany Toronto Photographs: Then and Now

Given that the first photos on this thread are Davenport and Ford, and Dundas and Gooch, here are some very early maps of Davenport and vicinity (from Canda's Public Archives), one from around 1800 when it had the name New Road as well as illustrations of very early buildings on Dundas...

    Street photos 194o's to 1980's

Thank you so much for posting these links. I absolutely love the Harry Joy photos. One from the EX is simply haunting. http://www.blackandwhitephotography.ca/harryjoy/content/EHJ_137_large.html

    Stucco Buildings

I agree absolutely. The stucco craze is a blight however if people have older homes and want to insulate them, the only option is applying insulation on the brick and then covering it with stucco. I'd be interested to know how much it cuts energy consumption, if its significant then that...

Miscellany Toronto Photographs: Then and Now

If you are ever around Yonge and Fairlawn try Caz's Fish & Chips. If Plaice is on the menu that day, I'd highly recommend it. That said, I discovered the something the other day that I thought might be of some interest, namely that the Nordheimer's had a family burial vault (and quite a...

Miscellany Toronto Photographs: Then and Now

Great shots including one of Bassels Restaurant though without the snake plants that as I recall were always in the window.

Miscellany Toronto Photographs: Then and Now

So true and those massive green lamp posts with that white cutesy flourish on top don't add anything to that building or anything to Spadina for that matter.

Miscellany Toronto Photographs: Then and Now

Was The Audrey at the corner of either Oriole or Deer Park Crescent in what was a wonderful mid -century office building? And Fran's pies were great as was Mrs Deck's Green Goddess Salad dressing.

Miscellany Toronto Photographs: Then and Now

There was another Fran's on Yonge around Gould. I will never forget the location because in 1980 a cockroach walked across my friend's baked potato.

Miscellany Toronto Photographs: Then and Now

Re The Claridge One evening last autumn my Mom and I went for a stroll in that neighobourhood to see how Popular Plains had changed. Having gone to Brown School as a child I have always had a real fondness for that area. As we peered through the The Claridges lobby windows, the Super came...

Historic photos from Toronto on this day

Thanks for posting. This branch is where I had my first bank account as I grew up in that neck of the woods. I think that bank instilled in me a love of Modernism. What the photo doesn't show however is a huge radio that was on a shelf, high on the back wall. The radio was never on when I...
