Miscellany Toronto Photographs: Then and Now

I used to drive up Way's everyday to my loft parking at 75 Markham. Cool little street, quite often got stuck in the winter as the City never ploughed it.

    Restaurant Comings & Goings

There is no way an independent restaurant will ever sustain those rents. 6 months tops.

    What destroys you

I thought I saw them at a lovely bar mitzvah I attended in shot number 41... awesome photos...

Miscellany Toronto Photographs: Then and Now

A pretty ravine and neighbourhoods would have been destroyed for sure...but my god that highway would be handy.

Miscellany Toronto Photographs: Then and Now

Sadie, I too remember my euphoria when I first stumbled upon this thread...then the preceding 3 hours as I reviewed every photo...the next step of your obsession may result in blisters as you constantly hit the refresh icon in hopes of Mustapha's next find.... I am still a newb but welcome...

    Smart Centre developments

Of all the SmartCentres, the most unsuccessful from both retail performance and functionality are the ones that have the highest degree of planner input (Thornhill). Crappy retail sites make for poor retail performance, poor retail performance means lower revenues for the landlord or massive...

News on retail chains (was: New Mall Retail)

Target buying Zellers is a total pipe dream. Although there are handful of decent locations with decent deal terms there are so many small market stores and odd sizes. American retailers (Target, Costco, WalMart, Home Depot, Lowes) are all about prototypical real estate. Even Erin Mills/Sq 1...

News on retail chains (was: New Mall Retail)

I am pretty sure CF either owns the Ryerson/CT/Best Buy building or they joint ventured. CF did the initial lease up there

Cinespace Studios in Etobicoke (Kipling s of Norseman)

Its always nice to see a story like this buried in the paper after all the doom and gloom about the loss of industrial jobs. What an amazing story, low paying manufacturing jobs being replaced by better-paying white collar jobs and the re-use of a nasty old industrial wasteland.

Advice on Real Estate Agent Dealing w/ Lofts

There are something like 23,000 agents in the City of Toronto so painting them all with the same brush...whether positive or negative is somewhat impossible. I deal with agents every day...some great...some horrible. Although its fun to surf MLS all night and call for appointments, a good agent...

News on retail chains (was: New Mall Retail)

Roots has been on a real downsizing mission over the years, Sherway was the first to downsize from about 6,000 to 2,000 to make way for kids abercrombie. Bayview Village also went from about 7500 to 1500. They seem a little lost these days. Cools stuff, good quality, but sort of lost their way...

Toronto non-mall retail (Odds & Ends)

I tend to disagree with your lifestyle centre comment. I think Shops at Don Mills is a really well executed project and technically "should" work. The issue it faces is that they failed to attract any unique retailers. If they had secured Crate and Barrel (and Yorkdale didn't) or Tiffany or...

News on retail chains (was: New Mall Retail)

Good plan in theory...In reality, however, not one of those tenants would ever take a position on dead run between Sears and Zellers. Cool though

    Fireplaces

I have never heard they are illegal, they sell them at a lot of stores now. I found a manufacturer in Montreal that makes nice stuff www.eco-feu.com, I believe the sell them at a place on Davenport near Dupont. There is another place called Pureflame (google ethanol fireplaces concord) and...

News on retail chains (was: New Mall Retail)

I agree that they speak very well to their demographic. What frustrates me with their company is how they have not adapted to demographic or social trends. To me the greatest example of their inability to react to the needs of a consumer was the launch of their REUHL brand. It was the new AF...

Toronto non-mall retail (Odds & Ends)

I don't think it was just CB2 that spiked the rents. More than likely the RioCan tribute building, the Starbucks in the grubby old Mr Sub, costly renovation of the Burroughes Building and very expensive re-building of the Duke's row that raised the rents.

News on retail chains (was: New Mall Retail)

A&F and Holister are getting there a$$es kicked in the US and although sales have remained relatively robust in Canada it will be a while before they build another store...I guess the down economy has consumers questioning the need for a new "vintage" style $45.00 T-shirt that looks identical to...
