    Dead/Decaying Malls of Greater Toronto

the second floor has been essentially mothballed. Apparently when they re-did the old Zellers into Winners, etc it impacted parking, as such, adding more leasable area impacts parking negatively. Ironically full parking lots are something Cloverdale never really has to worry about.

    The 'Restaurant Makeover' Curse

I think the JEEP themed restaurant in Clarkson (Mississauga) is gone too.

    Target

Once Target opens one store in Canada Zellers value is in the toilet. Zellers only value is the real estate, however, its also a curse for a purchaser. Zellers has many small markets stores and has a very scattered footprint. Walmart sort of scored because Woolco was in more significant...

    Target

It would be sad if the Canadian Target stopped the US Target from coming. I personally think the Canadian retail scene would benefit much more from having an innovative, clean and well-run discount anchor than protecting a defunct chain(?) of cheap tacky clothes. Issac will not doubt take a...

    Mississauga (non-mall) Retail

there will definitely be more Panera's added in the GTA. Not sure where, but they have a lot invested in the Toronto market. The next US chain that needs to set up in Toronto is Five Guys Burgers and Fries....

    Mississauga (non-mall) Retail

It looks cool, but the Square 1 area doesn't strike me as the area for upscale organic dining. The office market is quite soft and lacks a Platinum Card lunch crowd, evenings are more about family theatre dining. There is a lot of serious competition in the market, and surely more to come as...

    Target

They have leased 6 locations....in most cases they are going into old Winners spaces where Winners has moved onto new space. Colossus Centre, Warden and Eglinton, Laird and Eglinton are the ones I have heard

    Square One Shopping Centre

I agree with Doady... Square 1 has to be one of the most unappealing places to walk in the GTA. Even the SQ1 Parking lot isn't configured well for pedestrians.

    Movies that feature Toronto

I can't remember the name...but the movie where Russel Crowe was the depression era boxer was filmed here. The factory scenes were the Distillery District and they gussied up the mid-block Richmond Street entrance to the Bay to replicate Madison Square Gardens

Toronto non-mall retail (Odds & Ends)

Further to the HITS AND MISSES section of the article... Running Room has been a hit in the US...I believe thanks to modest growth and focusing on markets they understand. They are Edmonton based and are now in the mid-northern states. Many Canadian retailers head straight for the glam markets...

    Blockbuster Video

With the pending bankruptcy in the US its only a matter of time before there are a rash of closures in Canada. Queen and Spadina closed a few months ago and I have heard a couple others have disappeared...Does anyone have any insight into this?

    Toronto Eaton Centre

I was down there about a week ago. I think they were trying to drive customers out with the stench of the fountain near the HMV escalators. It was in desperate need of some chlorine.

    Yorkdale Shopping Centre

The last renovation of Yorkdale was amazing and won a bunch of awards, but don't forget it was to deal with the massive whole left my Eatons and subsequently eatons (sears). Taking a 500,000sf anchor store that pays next to no rent (or is owned by the anchor) and replacing it with large high...

News on retail chains (was: New Mall Retail)

The issue with renovating or expanding the major malls like Yorkdale and TEC is that they are already at the top of their earning potential. Since they are both owned by pension funds the return on sinking hundreds of millions into expansion may not payout as easily as it would upgrading a B...

    Toronto 335 Yonge | 55.2m | 16s | Lalani | Zeidler

They just put the sushi restaurant in which probably escalated the building's demise. The landlord was asking about $30,000.00 a month for rent. Why they would put a restaurant in is beyond me, there is no way they will make it.

    Toronto Eaton Centre

Parking is probably important to the 2 office towers also and office users within the upper floors of TEC. Every time I use the lot (which is every single time I go there even though I live on a subway line) its pretty full
