    Toronto Ontario Line 3 | ?m | ?s

By skipping/ignoring the environmental assessments and public consultations. Like how things used to be built. (Okay I am exaggerating a bit, there were public consultations but the changes made were mostly cosmetic/small in scope, more like presentations than consultations) This is...

    VIA Rail

Plz no. The Greyhound station is so convenient, just at the edge of Centretown. I can reliably and quickly walk there... not possible with Tremblay station where I need to give myself extra margin and usually an uber ride to get there. The LRT isn't running yet btw, not until next summer. Via...

    TTC: Other Items (catch all)

That's exactly what I was thinking! It reminded me of the original vitrolite tiles. $563 million: isn't that relatively cheap for resignalling? And isn't 2019 a very tight timeline compared to other resignalling contracts? I know NYC is struggling to update their signalling, although their...

Thank you for the links! And I never realized there was a separate passenger-only sub from Lachine to Lucien L'Allier, I would see the freight trains pass by at Dorval AMT station and assumed they used the whole length of it, or at least most of it. If they could buy that section from CP, that...

This. I don't think that the Mayor is supposed to be able to have the power to say that their electoral campaign napkin map is now the city's top priority, since now there is that arms-length provincial agency (the ARTM) which is supposed to be in charge of that. So we will see if the Pink line...

    Toronto Crosstown LRT | ?m | ?s | Metrolinx | Arcadis

Do you have a source for this? None of the TTC budgets I can find break down operating/maintenance costs by mode. Also, that's not the kind of grade separation that I had in mind. With the wide setbacks, back-to-the-street current urban form, and all the redevelopment potential, it would make...

    Toronto Crosstown LRT | ?m | ?s | Metrolinx | Arcadis

Just like for Spadina, St Clair, or any other TTC surface route? If they haven't been able to give decent signal priority to existing routes after decades of operation, why would they do it now? Toronto traffic control is concerned about one thing: moving cars through as efficiently as possible...

    Toronto Crosstown LRT | ?m | ?s | Metrolinx | Arcadis

Why would maintenance costs double? Operating costs would certainly go way down because it could be driverless. Combined operating and maintenance costs for a grade-separated LRT line would almost certainly be lower. Operating/maintenance costs for Eglinton are projected to be $80 million/year...

If anything, that should be an off-setting cost against grade-separating Eglinton east. Spending a little extra to elevate Eglinton east would have prevented the $3.5 billion one-stop 6.3 km subway. That kind of reinforces his point. To me, though, it's not so much the potential for the...

    VIA Rail

Ah, thank you for explaining. It's my shortcoming to not understand the non-existent business case for your legions of hypothetical investors, willing to pour billions into a new train corridor to replace a heavily-subsidized service for an uncertain financial return. Please let me know which...

    VIA Rail

In your opinion, both will be privately done so I'm not sure why you would insultingly question my ability to distinguish between the two. In order for a private company to invest in and lease HFR, it has to generate a profit. Given the current economics of Via Rail, and the fact that their...

    VIA Rail

You claimed it. In other words it's government-funded and not a cash cow ripe for private takeover that Canadians will ruefully regret selling for heaps of foreign money.

    VIA Rail

The rant was about wifi and quick wins vs. megaprojects. "They" is clearly Via Rail. The idea that Via Rail can privately fund a capital project of several billion dollars without a cent of government assistance and turn a profit on it is laughable. This a company that spends ~$2 for each...

    VIA Rail

And so was Rob Ford's Sheppard line extension. Billions of taxpayer dollars are going into this regardless of whatever pension fund gets to profit on government debt.

    Toronto Bike Share

I use Bixi even though I own a bike. Normally I use bixi in scenarios: where I don't want the hassle of carrying bike locks + helmet because I'm already loaded up when it's wet out, and I don't want to bring a muddy bike back into my apartment or get dirty (my bike doesn't have a mud-guard)...

    VIA Rail

The onboard wifi on VIA is garbage. Considering that the only advantage Via has over bus/plane is the ability to work on the trip, it's mindblowing that they don't have properly functioning wifi. Nowadays you can get better internet while flying. Before asking for billions for a whole new route...

    Cycling infrastructure (Separated bike lanes)

If it's a requirement, there should be some kind of standard for how loud the bell is and for how reliably it and the lights function. In Montreal, all the bixis come with bells and lights... except the lights don't work half the time, the bells only work after a couple attempts, and don't work...

    Toronto Crosstown LRT | ?m | ?s | Metrolinx | Arcadis

So according to google maps, we would be looking at ~5 minute detour, which is a bit much. I hate dogs' legs and milk runs in transit; buses are normally slow enough as it is. It's also 1 km between Jane and the rail corridor. So it's fair to put Jane back on the list of essential stops.
