One comment: an average (assuming a mean) should not be expressed as a range
Thank you. I have two cats, one overweight at 9 kg, another underweight at 5 kgs. But my household's average cat is a healthy 7 kg.
A huge difference is stop spacing, which is on average every 600-650 m on Finch W, and every 850 m on Hurontario. So we'll see how big a difference that makes....in a couple year lol.
| Line | Approx. Length | Stops | Average Stop Spacing |
|---|
| 5 Eglinton | ~19 km | 25 | ~500–850 m* |
| 6 Finch West | ~10.3 km | 18 | ~600–650 m |
| 10 Hurontario | ~18 km | 19 | ~850 m |
Thankfully, we actually invented a tool to solve this problem that averages shouldn't be ranges but also may not convey some useful information. This is called standard deviation. I've taken the liberty (aka i'm procrastinating) to measure and calculate it.
| Line | Length (km) | Stops | Average Stop Spacing (stdev), (m) |
|---|
| 6 Finch West | 10.4 | 18 | 612 (219) |
| 6 FW, 08, FW to HC [1] | 10.4 | 15 | 743 (247) |
| 5 EC, Phase 1 | 18.9 | 25 | 787 (278) |
| 5 EC, Phase 1 West [2] | 12.6 | 15 | 897 (225) |
| 5 EC, East [2] | 6.3 | 11 | 633 (283) |
| 10 Hurontario | 18.3 | 19 | 1015 (463) |
Some takeaways, though probably none of them are revolutionary or new:
- 10 Hurontario has by far the largest average stop spacing. It exceeds even 5 EC's underground segments.
- It probably doesn't feel like that too much, but the distance is probably skewed by the three highways it passes through with no stops. Derry -> Ray Lawson is 1971m and is by far the largest gap btwn. stations among 5,6, and 10.
- I will have to agree that stop spacing will be a HUGE factor in this. Combined with sane transit priority and operating, I suspect 10 is possible of exceeding 2.5x 6FW current speeds. 6FW simply cannot be operated as fast as 10 can due to the massive stop spacing here. *It will remain to be seen the speed restriction on the guideway from the south. I suspect it may not be pretty, but AFAIK we do not know the turn radius of it.
- Hurontario stop spacing seems to vary more than the others, primarily due to some oddly short distances (RL -> CC 461m, CC -> BG 572m) and incredibly long distances due to highways (Mineola -> NS 1280m, MCC -> Eglinton 1762m, Britannia -> Courtney 1612m, Derry -> Ray Lawson 1971m) but overall the stop spacing is much longer than 5 and 6.
[1] The 2008 proposal of 6 FW from Finch West (then Keele) to Humber College (then Humber College Blvd). Alexdon to Finch is removed, as Humber College. Effectively, modern 6FW with stops Tobermory, Pearldale, and Stevenson have been removed.

.ods spreadsheet of stop spacing & calculations btwn. stations for 5,6,10 provided. For some reason, UT doesnt allow ods but does allow zips, so it's compressed.
