Miscellany Toronto Photographs: Then and Now

Interesting to put the Nortown interiors in the context of the influence of surrealism in 1940's design (as shown in the current surrealism show at the AGO).

I think such Surrealism-tinged stylistics were Morris Lapidus's stock-in-trade, back when he was a fashionable storefront'n'interior specialist and before he became Mr. Miami Beach...

Looking SSW on Yonge just a bit S of Bloor.

These are two views of the St. Lawrence neighbourhood, taken I believe from the old Bank of Commerce Building. The first shot is from the 40's or 50's; the second from the 60's. It would be interesting to see the same view today.

Ah, from Steak'n'Burger to Le Chateau. But interesting to note re the single vs plural naming confusion lately: the sign in the old photo says "Roys [or even Roy's?] Square.

Also note the balcony and window replacements in the Yonge/Charles tower.

Interesting that triangular shaped block 'anchored' - as it were - by the Gooderham building was a Victorian 'warehouse city' like the rest of the area. These aerials are always informative, in a macro manner - sorry, I'm not a geographer or planner, describing it in my vernacular here. :)

Roy's Square - a gem of small lane it was. I thought I was in London UK when I walked it - no cars; mostly independent owner shops.

So many thoughts

So many thoughts:

1) I loved the Uptown, I miss it. I think we should arrest someone for its demolition!

2) Steak & Burger  Wow. I don't remember that signage on it. Or that location. I remember my mom taking me to one in Gerrard Square when I was little; and I remember eating one my first meals alone in a restaurant, a very adult experience, at maybe 11 or 12 years of age; in the Union Station location.

3) There's the GREEN P on the White Background! :D Don't remember it ever being that way. Hmmm, the signs look better now I think; but shouldn't we change the name to 'White P' parking? :p

Well, until the 80s or so, that's the way Green P used to be--green on white. (Interesting, too, the old 20th Century theatre chain advertised on top of the Uptown pylon.)

I remember Steak and Burger too. My mom used to take me to the one at Fairview Mall. I think it's a Michel's Baguette now.

Someone above mentioned the Eglinton (movie theatre)...I've only been there once.....I was 18 years old and saw...TITANIC there at the end of '97/early '98...

There used to be a Steak 'n Burger in Sherway Gardens too.

The Uptown was very cool - It was neat how the movie screen sat on the stage on an angle. I think the last movie I saw there was A Perfect Murder in 1998.

It pains my eyes to see a nice historic building having been replaced by the awful St. Lawrence Centre concrete hulk. I say replace it!

To be fair, even Eric Arthur might not have found the old worth keeping, back when the St Lawrence Centre was built (and that was after Toronto: No Mean City)--esp. if it meant something more than a parking lot replacing it. Just trying to understand things through the prism of the day. (Oddly enough, the established heritage sentiment might be more pro-St Lawrence Centre today than it was pro-what it replaced in the mid-60s.)

How come when historic theatres such as the Imperial (Pantages...Canon) are renovated/restored they tend to pick the weakest era of signage and marquee to recreate? The worst example is the Elgin/Wintergarden which is so minimalist in signage, it's almost invisable.
