TOKYO - Two elderly passengers taken off the quarantined cruise ship Diamond Princess because they were infected with the new virus have died, Japan's Health Ministry said Thursday, becoming the first fatalities from the virus-stricken vessel.

Japan now has three deaths linked to the COVID-19 illness.

The ministry also announced 13 more cases on the ship, bringing the total to 634, by far the largest number in one location outside mainland China.

Scientist decries ‘completely chaotic’ conditions on cruise ship Japan quarantined after viral outbreak

By Dennis Normile Feb. 19, 2020 , 2:45 PM

A Japanese infectious disease specialist has harshly criticized the way Japan’s government has handled the COVID-19 crisis aboard a luxury cruise ship docked in Yokohama. Conditions on board the Diamond Princess were “violating all infection control principles” and “completely chaotic,” the scientist, Kentaro Iwata of Kobe University, said in a YouTube video posted on Tuesday evening.

His claims are inflaming an already intense debate over Japan’s handling of the crisis. Scientists have also faulted the slow release of epidemiological data about the ship that could help control efforts elsewhere.

Apparently, laying on of hands or any other form of faith healing don't work for curing COVID-19. It only makes things worse.

Ukraine protestors attack buses carrying Chinese evacuees.

The evacuees were being brought to the hospital in Novi Sanzhary, in the central Poltava region, where they will be held in quarantine for 14 days.

Many residents fear the virus could spread through the town, which has a population of about 10,000.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky urged people to show solidarity, and to remember that "we are all human".

Earlier on Thursday, 45 Ukrainians and 27 foreign nationals were flown from Wuhan in China, the epicentre of the deadly outbreak, to Kharkiv in eastern Ukraine. Six buses then drove them to the hospital in Novi Sanzhary, where they were met by demonstrators lighting bonfires and hurling stones.

Iran’s health ministry on Friday reportedly confirmed the coronavirus had spread to several cities nationwide, before adding the flu-like virus might exist in all of them. “Based on existing reports, the spread of the coronavirus started in Qom and with attention to people’s travels has now reached several cities in the country, including Tehran, Babol, Arak, Isfahan, Rasht, and other cities. And it is possible that it exists in every city in Iran,” Health Ministry official Minou Mohrez said Friday, Reuters reported, citing the country’s official IRNA news agency. It comes after the Islamic Republic confirmed 18 total cases on Friday, and four patients have died.

When anti-science ignorance meets public policy...

US flies infected cruise ship passengers back to the US alongside uninfected passengers against the advice of the CDC.

The State Department and a top Trump administration health official wanted to forge ahead. The infected passengers had no symptoms and could be segregated on the plane in a plastic-lined enclosure. But officials at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention disagreed, contending they could still spread the virus. The CDC believed the 14 should not be flown back with 300 uninfected passengers. The Trump administration overruled that decision.

The Iran case is proof travel bans don't work as intended (Iran implemented a travel ban a few weeks before the first case and death in Iran from the virus).

The YouTuber who believes that Canada should implement a travel ban that I linked to earlier is a complete nutjob (except from his supporters who too are nutjobs in denial).

Coronavirus: South Korea confirms huge rise in cases

South Korea says the number of new coronavirus cases in the country has more than doubled in one day.

Officials said on Saturday that 229 new cases had been confirmed since Friday, raising the total to 433.

Italian authorities have implemented draconian measures to try to halt the coronavirus outbreak in the north of the country, including imposing fines on anyone caught entering or leaving outbreak areas, as cases of the virus in the country rose to more than 130.

About 50,000 residents across the towns under lockdown have been told to stay home and avoid social contact, while schools, shops and businesses, apart from chemists, have been closed and festivities and sporting events including Serie A football matches and the final two days of the Venice carnival cancelled.
