York Region Transit: Viva service thread

The 2019 "Transit Initiatives" are a bit of a joke as well. The first phase of a "frequent transit network" will guarantee only a 15-minute frequency during rush hours - and then routes like 25 Major Mackenzie (I guess a new route taking over from part of Route 4) will run every 26-29 minutes during rush hours in 2019. Very little in terms of transit improvements. No Viva Silver.

Brampton Transit's plans for 2018 aren't amazing, but they are in the right direction - frequency improvements on the busiest routes, some expansion to new areas, reconfigurating other routes based on demand. I'm not crazy on some of MiWay's changes, but they too, are also in the right direction. And Mississauga, unlike Brampton and York Region, is built out.

Running buses every 18 minutes where you just spend hundreds of millions of dollars building exclusive lanes for those buses? I don't understand it.
 
They don't. We've been over this a few times in the thread - your hometown has the same level of service as York Region. Stop bringing it up.
Stop making excuses already. You don't know what you're talking about in this space. You're the only one that think this level of service is adequate.

This is what York Region should be doing. Not half piece measures and neglecful service after rush hour.
DRT does the same "rationalization" and "redistribution" as YRT. It is not any better.
In fairness, finally there is going to be a nonstop connection from Northeast Oshawa to the GO station without transfering downtown or Oshawa Centre.

YRT usually cuts service in April because much of its ridership is made up of university/college students, so I wouldn't read too much into them. Of course, YRT should be doing more to increase its ridership base, but that's another story. Now September service changes, on the other hand...

It's because only Yonge has enough demand for both an "express" Viva service and a local YRT service. On other routes, the YRT and Viva routes are cannabalizing each other.

All due to poor planning of course. Frankly, all day go service is already here and will be complete by 2024 at the latest, YRT needs to have a better plan.

And political reasons. YRT/Viva operations are contracted to several private companies, and one of the unstated reasons why YRT maintains both Viva and local YRT routes is so Viva operators have much less leverage (as they learned when they went on strike in 2008). People simply switched to the corresponding YRT route, which did result in longer waits and more crowding, but was really a relatively minor hassle. The strike ended quietly after 2 weeks.

There are no Go Trains arriving in York Region that late. The last trains show up at Aurora and Unionville around 11:30. Viva keeps operating until around 1 AM to meet those trains, and bus service on Yonge goes until later - the last trips leave Newmarket at 2 AM, and Finch at 2:30 or later since the last subway trains get there at 2:20.

Yup. That's one of the problems with the private contractors, their trying to make money. I'm surprised King hasn't lost their bus route yet...

Not sure if the bus was strictly for demo purposes or if they've actually received the ones they ordered, and I don't know if the charging station at Newmarket Bus Terminal has been installed, or when service will start. I think service was supposed to start, originally, in Spring 2018.

According to The Canadian Urban Transit Research and Innovation Consortium (CUTRIC),who is coordinating the projects, "The buses are expected to begin service in 2019."
