Why? If we had a run-off, it would be the same thing. If we had a second and third ranking on the ballot it would be the same thing. There are only 2 candidates polling with any significant amount of the vote.

The saddest thing is the quality of any of the 6 leading candidates ... before the last last 2 dropped out.
 
At least a ranked ballot system would allow us to vote for our real first choice without feeling like we'd be dooming the city to our last choice.

Agreed generally, though - we got a terrible slate of candidates.
 
I had a brain fart & accidentally clicked on Rob Ford, what a damn idiot I am. I'm voting Smitherman, or whoever is the closest challenger to Ford if it's not Smitherman and Ken Chan for Ward 27.

^ That's ok. You represent the percentage of voters who will accidentally cast their vote for the wrong candidate. I did it once, but I realized my mistake and requested a new ballot.
 
I voted for Rocco Rossi. I believe he is the best person for the job. He appears extremely intelligent, hard working and genuine.

I don't trust what I hear from George Smitherman. Rob Ford appears sincere but not polished enough to lead a city of this size.

Who says you have to "vote for" someone? can't you "vote against" someone too? Did you ever stop to think that perhaps someone might feel like they have more to gain from someone not being elected than from voting for the person who is most aligned with their beliefs? Maybe you should grow up and think a bit more instead of thinking like this is a grade 9 election?

But the polling might already reflect strategic voting. I don't think we know how people would vote if they ranked candidates. Either way, we're in a system where the mayor of this city might have only 1/3rd of the city's support (and that doesn't even factor in the % of people who don't vote). If the result is the same then that's fine. I don't care what the result is when we're discussing electoral reform. I just want to see elections that actually reflect the populace.
 
In my opinion I would prefer that I had a choice to vote for someone I want instead of voting for someone to prevent someone else getting elected.

I wanted Thomson, however, it seems to me that Smitherman is the best compromise at the moment.

I can see myself voting for SMITHERMAN this election. Unless something drastic occurs that forces me to strategically vote for another candidate that has a better chance of being Ford than does Smitherman, that's where my vote will stay.
 
I dont live in the city but I clicked on Smitherman. Same reasons as many have already mentioned... he's the least offensive of a bad crop that is polling high enough to possibly prevent Ford from getting in.

I have voted strategically on many instances, picking my second choice in order to prevent a more despised candidate/party from winning. For example nationally I voted Liberal in order to elect Paul Martin his first time around and keep Harper out. When another election came around soon after and it was obvious the Libs didnt have a chance I voted my conscience which is Green. One thing that I do like in national elections is that parties rec'v public funding based on the number of votes they get, so in effect I was voting some money to the party of my choice. There is no such consolation in municipal votes...
 
I also don't live in the city, but I voted for Smitherman. It's time Toronto had a gay mayor. And Thomson, who I did support, threw her support behind Smitherman. Plus he has an adequate (read: doable) transit plan.
