A small correction - the firm heading this project is Field Operations, not Foreign Office Architects.
Thanks for pointing that out - corrected.
A small correction - the firm heading this project is Field Operations, not Foreign Office Architects.
Background:
The primary goal of this initiative is to build sports fields in Toronto's Port Lands to serve new and existing residents of Toronto and the GTA while reclaiming underutilized land. Although efforts will be made to identify permanent locations for such facilities, these facilities are intended to be transitional uses for lands that might not be developed for 10 to 15 years.
The artificial playing surfaces will offer premium level playing facilities that will be available for intensive use through an extended playing season. The artificial surfaces will be uniquely effective in addressing soils remediation through capping while providing surfaces requiring low maintenance requirements. These recreational uses are in high demand in an under serviced area and they will bring people to the Portlands.
The plan will involve:
Construction of 2 new artificial turf fields and amenities.
A new planting program introducing a diverse and sustainable plant community of native species with an enhancement of existing natural grove areas.
Overland drainage will be featured through planted swales and a wetland zone that will be integrated within the overall planting and soils remediation program.
Construction of park amenities to support the fields.
Do those fields have anything to do with Lake Ontario Park?
Pity that they just had to go and destroy that nice forest where those cool raves were held. This project is beyond lame. Well, at least the temporary sports field at the foot of Cherry street is.
I'm with you on that. Waterfrontoronto seems to be doing everything but creating/building permanent public parks and facilities on the waterfront.Temporary... so they can test it out?
Just get going and build it for real already!
