Urban Wilderness!

Mimico Creek - fairways to highways

I'm back this week to finish off the Toronto portion of the Mimico. As you'll recall, I last left off at the bottom end of the Royal Woodbine Golf Course. But I'm not all that fond of trekking golf courses as they all seem to look, I don't know, a little too golf-coursy for my tastes. Neither "urban" nor truly "wilderness." So I thought I skip the links and start north from Dixon Road, which my now 10 year old map shows to be the North Mimico Valley Park. Yet, to my great displeasure, when I arrive at Dixon I find the Royal Woodbine has since appropriated the valley all the way up to Highway 409! What's that old saying about golf again? "A good walk spoiled?" Oh well, on through the back 9:

Out of the golf course and under the highway now. You know you're entering uncharted territory when you find a bridge this large with absolutely no graffiti on it:

In between Highway 409 and the West Metro Detention Centre:

Through Carlingview Drive, then "hustling" along Disco Road:

The tunnel sections of my trips seem to just keep getting longer and darker. This one, under Highway 427, is so long and dark that I'm forced to use a nearby branch as a makeshift white cane, so I might blindly grope my way through this tenebrous tube:

83341349.jpg

83341357.jpg
83341353.jpg

I find my way safely to the other end, and into Mississauga, to find construction underway on the Air Rail Link overpass to Pearson (as well as morbid reminder of that ever encroaching golf-sprawl):

I had originally intended here to continue on along the Mimico, through Malton and Wildwood Park, to the forks of the Mimico at Derry Road. However, the construction on rail line impeded my progress. I could have pressed on anyway, but, as it happened, while surveying my course on Google Earth earlier in the day, something else caught my attention towards the south. So I follow the tracks beside the 427 to investigate:

At the centre of your typical cloverleaf onramp you'll generally find an empty field - occasionally even a tree or two. But here, where Highway 427 intersects with Highway 409, is a rather interesting feature: two massive stormwater retaining pools! First the northwest pool:

83341381.jpg

83341384.jpg

Risking life and limb (and probably some sort of fine) as I negotiate my way on foot across the interchange - this is for anyone worried that my posts were beginning to focus too much on the "wilderness" and not enough on the "urban." Thankfully it wasn't rush hour!:

And here, at last, the southeast pool, in all its concrete splendor:

Hmmm.... A few thoughts,
West detention centre, no people in orange jumpsuits trying to pry themselves out of that drain?
An (hopefully) empty trunk on the river bank!
A random vent, probably for a siphon or some other chamber.
Much needed rail infrastructure!
Those pools have been covered on Vanishingpoint.ca
And of course,,,, Bender!

As to Rudy's Charles H Hiscott bridge, I have traversed the underside catwalk many times as a teenager! I attended both schools on the east end of it.

Edit: oh yes, very nice set EvC!!

I eagerly await seeing the lower reach of Mimico Creek that is south of the QEW with it's shale outcroppings and flagstone bed. The hanging footbridge is long gone as well as it's

foundations as is the sewage treatment plant s/w of the CNR Mainline; all for comment in the future.

(Then of course, there are William (Bill) Bonar & "Speedy".)

J T

No escaped convicts and nothing in the trunk (that I could see, anyway), but there were a few more of those random vents.
I actually checked that Vanishpoint article right before posting just to make sure they were infact stormwater pools (as I suspected) and not something else. From the satellite images it was hard to tell exactly what they were - sewage treatment ponds, roadside kelp farm?
And yes, Bender! (I wonder if they'll be back to finish off his head?)

You must have missed my post of a year or so ago: Mimico Creek (Islington Club to The Lake)

This still may be my favourite hike to date, if only for the sheer diversity of landscapes along the way!

^ either that, or druids...

Cudmore Creek - merry creekmas!

For my last post before the holidays I took a very quick trip down to the last of the LostRivers(.ca)...or, at least, the last one of which any remains - the Cudmore Creek; beginning where it enters the Don, just north of Pottery Road:

83593294.jpg

Over Bayview Avenue and into the backwoods of Governor's Bridge:

As if by some Christmas miracle I just happen to stumble across what appears to be the remnants of a fallen chimney. And then, but a few steps away, I find a little stocking stuffer! It would seem even tree-forts get a visit from Santa:

A few, final yards before the creek heads under True Davidson Drive for good:

Not a lot of sights to be had for the infrastructure enthusiast along the Cudmore, so before leaving I take a few shots of the nearby Don Valley Subdivision, running under True Davidson and Bayview Ave:

fantastic that you were so close and didn't call me

i trust you did not try to find the exit from the creek to the governor's estate subdivision, near your fallen chimney, which is mentioned on the lostrivers.ca site, but which most definitely is not there

further north from your last pic, cudmore creek's ravine is visible in a small bit of forest at the corner of bayview and nesbitt drive, and then again just north of the vestigial piece of pottery road beside the loblaws through sandy bruce park, past my apartment building, across bayview and into mount pleasant cemetery

Sorry about that! I forgot that was your area. This was really one of those spur of the moment trips, on the way to somewhere else. I just sort of skimmed the LostRivers site (mainly for the map) before leaving, hence I didn't even know about the governor's estate exit.

I actually did take a couple more pictures of the ravine, though...or, at least, of a ditch with some water in it running along Bayview - but wasn't sure if it was worth posting. Then again, you could say that about most of what I post, so here they are:

Haven't been around lately as I've been back in my hometown of London for the holidays - but that doesn't mean my wilderness ways have taken a holiday too! Plenty of new shots up on my page. Obviously not Toronto-related, so I won't post them all here, but still possibly of interest to those familiar with the city, or just fans of Southern Ontario outdoor urbanity...

I've gotten through your entire thread now including your recent updates and once again thank you EVCco. You have a knack for taking hikes in a lot of the routine routes I take in and around the city. From Jane-Wilson to the airport trail to the St.Phillips area of the Humber River. I've always wondered what these wilderness areas looked like ground view. Tommy Thompson park is definitely on my to do list now (nothing to do with my Thompson surname) and a few other east end trails as well now after viewing your thread.

Great job again and always look forward to your updates!

I'm glad I keep popping into this thread once in a while to catch up on the posts. I really wish I had more opportunity for this type of exploration myself.

That Highway 427 / 409 interchange looks like the Flying Spaghetti Monster.
Compare: Map vs. FSM

evcco has a knack for getting into some pretty obscure/remote/inaccessible corners of the urban wilderness, too, and i say this as someone who regularly goes for a romp in the ravines

Yes I've noticed he does and by routine, I obviously was referring to my driving routes. So many times I drive by these routes wondering what must be down there or how far does that creek go. Not to mention our trail walks don't go too far off the beaten path so it's nice to see where our walks might end if we did go beyond the normal path.

Thanks everyone! I haven't been online recently because I'm still in London due to a sudden death in the family.
I hope to be back in TO soon though to get up in some more obscure locations.
Nothing like a good hike to help clear your mind...
