TTC: Flexity Streetcars Testing & Delivery (Bombardier)

QUESTION: Will UT management be taking steps to set up support services for UTers who have been consumed 24/7 with the arrival (and subsequent departure and/or in service details) of the Flexities?

With the final cars from this order arriving soon it would be wise to be prepared - some of us will really not know what to do with their days - this energy should be channeled in constructive directions!

With Crosstown accepting deliveries and (shortly) commencing test runs...... and an alternate assembly plant taking shape in Brampton.... and MSF’s abuilding on Finch and Hurontario? Never fear.....the LRT vehicle OCD/anal retentiveness field is nothing but opportunity ;-)

Though this may be 'old news' I just saw a 509 (signed Harbourfront - off route) going east on King @ Church (home to the Barns) using its pantograph. Followed by a regular 504 with a pole.

It's now standard for all cars going in and out of service to Leslie on routes 509, 510 511 and 512 to go under [antogragh as the route they take along queen to king and either Spadina or Bathurst is all pantograph ready.

We also have a while until all the cars that need to go to La Pocatière to have their frames fixed have gone and returned. There is still room for some life in this thread.

I suppose some pressure wouldn't hurt.

The union representing Bombardier workers in Thunder Bay is calling on the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) and the City of Toronto to accelerate plans to order 60 new streetcars to keep the northwestern Ontario facility thriving beyond 2020.

Unifor brass appeared before the TTC board on Dec. 16 with a warning that any delay jeopardizes the future of Thunder Bay’s largest manufacturing plant.
According to the TTC’s five-year service plan, the funds for the 60 streetcars on order aren’t being allocated until 2022, too late to keep the Thunder Bay plant open.

Unifor wants the order to be accelerated, plus an additional 40 cars be purchased, and further that revenue from a City Building Fund be tapped into to purchase new subway cars from Bombardier rather than refurbish current trains.

Someone needs to quietly let the union know that even if the TTC wanted to buy 60 streetcars tomorrow there is virtually no capital money set aside in the budget to buy them. Maybe they should try and interest the City of Thunder Bay in a streetcar line to keep them in work.

Tory just increased property taxes, so capital money becomes available. I expect news at this month's Executive committee on allocation of these funds.

4600 off loaded today
4599 still doing testing
4406 still not tracking

The Union can work building cars at BBD lost cost until TTC has money to pay BBD for those cars. Then the Union must get BBD to buy all the parts to build the cars as well get the supplier to fast track the order, but when will the parts start showing up?? Since the Union is pay by BBD, is BBD willing to take the risk of building the 60-100 cars at their cost and hope TTC will take delivery of then and pay for them once they have the money???

At the end of the day once these 60-100 cars are built and assuming BBD doesn't pickup an order for Calgary Green Line Cars, the Union will be where it is today. 2020 or 2022, the Union will see The Thunder Bay Plant close as there is no work to be have and future orders will be done in Kingston and Quebec plants.
