TTC: Customer Service

I get the feeling that by the time I connect to a station's wifi my train will have arrived. Nor does using wifi in a crowd of people sound all that enticing anyways.

What if it takes 8–10 minutes for the train to come? The Wi-Fi should not be so fast, as to lower costs and discourage people from using it to watch YouTube or download large and/or many files at once.

TTC people-movers keep St. George running on time

http://www.thestar.com/news/gta/tra...plemovers_keep_st_george_running_on_time.html

Carolynn Smith runs St. George station with a delicate, yet firm touch, like a velvet glove covering an iron fist. Standing at the south end, she shepherds her flock in and out of the second busiest station in the TTC system.

“Please do not stop and block the doorway, move right inside the train,” she says in a soothing, robotic voice. “Please do not charge the doors.” The flock follows, opening up to let passengers out, then seamlessly stepping into the train. She’ll do this all again in a minute. Smith is part of a new team at St. George station that keeps traffic flowing. They work under Cameron Penman, who oversees the stations from Castle Frank to Spadina on the Bloor-Danforth line.

The TTC really should have put more LRVs on our 510 Spadina line. The vehicles are packed with passengers because of the closure on the Yonge and University subway lines.

Integrated TTC-GO fare urged for Liberty Village riders

.....

Toronto Councillor Mike Layton wants to ease congestion on the King streetcar by making it easier – and cheaper – for riders in his west-end ward to use the Exhibition GO train stop instead.

Mr. Layton, who represents the booming Liberty Village neighbourhood, says area residents and workers who use the GO train to travel the roughly three kilometres between the Exhibition stop and Union Station are paying the highest rates in the system based on distance. – $4.85 for a five-minute ride. And they must shell out even more if they want to use the Toronto Transit Commission system to reach their final destination.

Video prompts TTC to ask riders to hit subway alarm instead of taking matters into their own hands

http://www.thestar.com/news/gta/201...m_after_video_shows_inc ident_on_subway.html

The TTC is cautioning riders against the kind of physical confrontation captured in an amateur video that shows a passenger shoving a man who appears to be deliberately blocking the subway door. The video depicts the man, who appears angry or distressed, standing in the doorway preventing it from closing, although a TTC worker tries repeatedly to shut the doors.

Finally, another rider gets up and shoves the man backwards onto the platform, after which the person blocking the doors yells and begins kicking the departing train.

TTC spokesman Brad Ross said Monday the train operator was probably trying to get the man to step on or off the train so that it could move off the platform. A passenger, he said, should have pushed the yellow alarm strip in the subway car. That would have prompted a transit employee to investigate and alerted police and fire crews to the situation.

TTC chair urges fare deal for riders also using GO

http://www.thestar.com/news/gta/2013/12/04/ttc_chair_urges_fare_deal_for_riders_also_using_go.html

The chair of the TTC is urging Metrolinx to go fast on fare integration to give Toronto transit users some badly needed commuting alternatives. “There are quick wins to be had in piloting this project at GO Transit’s Exhibition, Bloor and Danforth stations,” wrote Karen Stintz to Metrolinx CEO Bruce McCuaig.

- “This proposal generates the opportunity to improve the lives of everyone who lives and works in Toronto and across our urban region,” she said. Metrolinx, which is already studying fare integration, has a report before its board on Thursday. If approved, Metrolinx staff would conduct public consultations in early 2014 and potentially launch a pilot before the end of next year.

- But the TTC has never had such an arrangement even though GO service connects with 10 subway and Scarborough RT stations. “If the program were applied in Toronto, there would be significant fare revenue losses and a resulting requirement for a new additional subsidy to offset these lost fare revenues,” said a report before the TTC board last month. It also noted that “there is very little space on GO rail services to accommodate new riders within Toronto.”

- Still, some GO stops are seen as having relief potential from the crowding on routes such as the King streetcar. It is regularly jammed, but Exhibition Station on the GO line could offer “a faster and more direct alternative than the TTC can offer,” said the TTC report. The total fare for passengers using both, however, is around $7 to $8 per trip, about four times higher than the TTC average fare of $2.

salsa:

I am looking forward to morons standing at chokepoints while they check one more facebook postings. It's bad enough as is with bright souls who decided that waiting at the interchange during rush hour and getting in the way of flow is a good and considerate thing to do.

And if data is so important to them, you'd think they'd spare a few bucks and get a better plan - you can actually get a decent signal at Bloor when the train isn't around.

I'm especially looking forward to the day when cellular service arrives, so that people can begin yammering on their phones too. Seriously, how long are people's underground commutes? Soon there will be no respite from the cellphone retards who can't function without the fucking thing in their hands, checking their Twitter and texting every few seconds, heyyy I'm at Dundas, now I'm at Queen lol ttyl k bye. What next, cellular service in elevators?

TTC boss Byford wants 'archaic' communication system updated

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toron...rchaic-communication-system-updated-1.2467053

.....

TTC boss Andy Byford said Tuesday that an "archaic" communication system was a factor in Monday's difficult commute in which a handful of problems caused thousands of transit users to arrive late for work.

- "It is a system that was state-of-the art in the 1970s, but is now completely obsolescent," said Byford. "It's basically a text system that you can send text messages to 10 vehicles at a time. You have to wait for them to acknowledge before you can then communicate with the other vehicles. So quite often, ridiculously, the bus and streetcar operators don't know what's going on."

- Byford said the TTC has much work to do when it comes to communicating with passengers when service is interrupted. Some so-called e-alerts failed on Monday and messages sent to subway platform screens aren't seen by many commuters. Byford said updating the communication system is a priority and he's pushing to have the money added to the TTC's budget

- Another problem Byford mentioned is the difficulty getting new parts for old streetcars. Some need to be fashioned by a blacksmith. Ongoing struggles with an outdated signalling system and track in need of replacement are also problems, Byford said.

I like the tv screens that tell you when the next subway is coming but why did TTC ever think it would be sufficient to install one screen on a platform?
