Miller's team okayed for committees
Key city council roles approved

Some Tory backers left in the cold

The slate of city councillors endorsed by Mayor David Miller to serve as chairs and members of standing committees has been approved, despite grumbling from some councillors who didn't get what they wanted.

Council's striking committee — a group of councillors who approve the membership of council's standing committees and some of the city's agencies, boards and commissions — gave their consent yesterday to the slate of candidates assembled on behalf of Miller by Councillor Joe Pantalone, one of Miller's deputy mayors.

Among the appointments confirmed yesterday was Councillor Howard Moscoe (Ward 15, Eglinton-Lawrence) as chair of the TTC. It's his third stint as TTC chair.

Among the other key chairs are David Soknacki (Ward 43, Scarborough East) of the budget committee, Michael Walker (Ward 22, St. Paul's) of administration, Olivia Chow (Ward 20, Trinity-Spadina) of community services, and Jane Pitfield (Ward 26, Don Valley West) of the works committee.

The chairs of some of the other high-profile city boards, including Exhibition Place, the health department and the Toronto Zoo, will be determined by the members of those boards as soon as they have their first meetings.

Each councillor was asked to identify their first, second and third choices of committees and agencies that they wanted to join.

Pantalone (Ward 19, Trinity-Spadina) pointed out that 32 of the 44 councillors got their first choice.

But there were four councillors who didn't get any of their three choices: Denzil Minnan-Wong (Ward 34, Don Valley East), Norm Kelly (Ward 40, Scarborough-Agincourt), David Shiner (Ward 24, Willowdale) and Giorgio Mammoliti (Ward 7, York West).

None of the four supported Miller in the election. Minnan-Wong and Mammoliti campaigned on behalf of John Tory, who finished second to Miller in the mayoral race.

Minnan-Wong, Kelly and Mammoliti are three of the goofiest councillors at City Hall. Nice to see them get the snub.

I liked the comment that I read that the nuttiest right-wingers—Shiner, Kelly, Mammoliti and Millan–Wong—got sent to Olivia Chow's re-education camp (aka Community Services committee). :lol

I think John Barber made that comment in a recent column.
