Toronto Yonge Sheppard Centre Renovations and Expansion | 123.13m | 35s | RioCan | BDP Quadrangle

DB13,.... that's odd, they disassembled the new rooftop jail/children outdoor play area (above Dollarama part of Mall).

Does it look like they're trying to fix a leak or rebuild it stronger or something?
Not sure what they're doing exactly. The floor plan for the post-renovation mall isn't totally clear on what will be built there, if anything. It's still more or less the same surface as when they tore down the cinema.

As mentioned last year, that area was supposed to be rooftop outdoor jail/children-play-area for the non-profit child care facility,... hence the jail bars!

Just figured it out,... I was looking at their original plans and thought they had to fix a leak because the dollarama underneath is always leaky,.... but they recently revised their plans,.... and that rooftop will now have a 2 storey structure added on top of that rooftop (notice they seem to be setting up wooden squares to form cement columns) to host part of the daycare and family services community space (obviously relocated from other part of complex - likely freeing that space for more retail, hmmm,....). The outdoor jail/children-play-area will move slightly north temporarily to where the pile of fencing are in your photo - then permanently on rooftop of 3 storey daycare facility at north end where current loading docks are.

Interesting.

When they had built the temporary daycare area, it was the saddest thing - kids playing in a cage, surrounding by the mess and noise of an active construction site.

And also Purdy's!

I was kind of hoping Burger King would come back with the new food court. In the old food court, Burger King was the only restaurant that drew in enough customers to stay open until the mall actually closed.

Burger King there can survive against McDonald's across the street, Wendy's in Empress Walk, and Hero Certified Burgers to the south.

Apparently the South Street Burgers at Yonge and Elmwood couldn't handle the competition. Saw a notice posted on the door that they will be closing for good on July 24.

South Street still has their Bayview Village location. The closest Burger King to NYCC is now at Keele/Wilson .

Definitely sad, daycare for little ones in a noisy messy construction zone; shows how short this area is of daycare facilities.

With all these little 1-bedroom bachelor condos going up on subway line in NYCC, city thought we don't need any infrastructure to support them, they're all single and will take subway. Reality is now, worst traffic congestion in GTA, overcrowded schools - condo kids are bused out, lowest park-space per capita, lack of adequate daycare facilities, etc,... these days, see baby stroller and little kids all over NYCC,.... 15-20 years ago, rarely see them,.... now being invaded!

Councillor Filion listening,... some of the Community Section 37 for various local developments have been directed towards non-profit childcare facilities including 72 spaces at Lansing United Church/Community Centre (open Jan 2018), 72 spaces at Avondale School (open Fall 2018) and 62 spaces at SheppardCentre (opens June 2019 - this 62 number seems low as it's supposed to be 4 times more capacity than previous daycare along Greenfield, maybe its 62 NEW spaces?)

Workers in hazmat suits remove an old sewage pipe bagged as a bio-hazard from the parking garage. A concrete pour takes place in the new building and a power trowel smooths the floor. The last old escalator and stairs in front of Shoppers comes down. Forms and re-bar are set for the next concrete pour.
