Richmond Hill Yonge Line 1 North Subway Extension | ?m | ?s | Metrolinx

Lol the YNSE team is having another virtual open house January 5... What better way to start of the year than having NIMBYs giving you shit and causing unnecessary delays. Jokes aside Kudos to Metrolinx for continuing consultation if it was the old Metrolinx they wouldn't have even bothered listening

In regards to the extension of the yonge north subway extension the project lead indicated it will not follow Yonge Street but rather the already established rail corridor north. They will also ensure the last station is ready for any extension that may occur and built in such a manner. Very interesting point. If that is the case the Ontario Line North Extension will need to be in the works as well because the project lead also noted that this current proposed extension will not open until the Ontario Line is fully functioning and has passengers.

Pressures on the Ontario Line that means!

METROLINX: Hi everyone. Welcome to our sixth virtual open house. Tonight we'll be presenting the new route you said we didn't consult about, it's been changed since the last route you said we didn't consult about which was changed because you said to change it. We'll also be explaining, in paninful detail, how the dumb idea you come up with costs a lot more, takes more time and otherwise doesn't work.
As in all the other open houses, you can ask questions below and we'll answer them for an hour and if we don't get to it tonight, we'll post answers on the webpage, where you can submit questions any time. Even inf your question is kind of rude or a bit of a personal attack, and you ask it 2 or 3 times trying for a "gotcha" moment, we'll do our best
Also, we're holding another open house in January. So that will be our....seventh? Yeah, 7. Then once the environmental project report addendum is finished, we'll be consulting on that. We also have our consulation staff here and I'll introduce them. They've been out in the community and we will soon be opening an office in the community so you can drop in to ask questions and try our fancy audio lab, which is something we've never done for any other project but we're really trying here.

RESIDENTS: We told you we don't like your plan and so did our MP and some local councillors. HoW cAn YOu CaLl ThIS COnsuLTaTioN??!

Has something changed with confirmed stations? Last I can see and still listed on their website was 4 stations (Steeles, Clark, Langstaff and High Tech).

All the route alingments still protect for a future Cummer Station and a future Royal Orchard station. Neither is back on the table yet, but neither is officially dead. That said, the potential location of the RO station box has now shifted from the plaza site to closer to Yonge.

That's kind of what they said. He really said they're doing it in such a way that it can go further north, and if it did it would be along the corridor, but York Region just built the BRT and there are no plans to actually do that any time in the near future. Any good design wouldn't preclude an extension. Finch Station was also designed so it could go further north. But it took 50 years to happen.

The business case for Royal Orchard is just so dead right now. I don't even know why it's still on the table. There's a point where you just have to stop proposing more stations. This is a suburban extension and so underground stations outside of the city deserve intense scrutiny unless they can actually serve an existing development or connect to a lot of buses. If they want Royal Orchard, let new developments fund and support them after the line opens, but heck, this line has a chance of actually being scrapped or cut back like crazy due to cost overruns. Cummer station in the city of Toronto, would already make it a way better candidate for a new station.

Well, I think we all know why it's still on the table. I've never liked the Royal Orchard station but, I mean, politically, maybe it's the smart move to say, "We saved money by not going back to Yonge and we're making even more money by enabling huge development at Bridge and High Tech (and probably even more development at Steeles and maybe at Clark and maybe at Royal Orchard) and therefore can justify spending a bit on this station.. You're welcome, Royal Orchard residents!"
(After which they'll complain about the noise and traffic from the new residents and pedestrians coming in and out of the station!)

Objective data suggests the station won't add much but since when was that the only consideration in GTA transit planning?

So you're telling me, Royal Orchard Station is now in an awkward spot? God just shut these NIMBYs up and let's cut and cover north of Royal Orchard to save money
Yonge has two lanes of setback the most of the length of the extension by a quick review on Google Earth. Could easily cut and cover the entire thing with minimal disruption. Whether that would save money, probably all the savings would be in the changes to station boxes which would be driven by cut and cover for the tunnel, not the tunnel itself.

That plus more work can be done in parallel meaning that the duration of the disruption will be far less. And since stations are now much shallower (cough cough Royal Orchard), they are more accessible and more convenient to use

At 50m depth, it is as good as dead.

If the tunnel was shallow at that point, then it would be nice to have a station at Royal Orchard to split the gap between Clark and Hwy 7.

In any case, Cummer is a higher priority than Royal Orchard.
