^ I hope it's new! Finally, some lighting action! Can't wait for them to switch the light above great hall's west entrance to street. It has switched on and off (at like 1 minute intervals) and has had a LOUD electrical buzzing for years!

New fixture? It looks new in person. It’s gorgeous.

July 11, 2018
These are the original fixtures tidied up - there are many of them around edges of Great Hall in the 'alcoves' above the doors and ramps. Some of the others have been partly refurbished but still need better (LED) bulbs. There are also plans for a better "central fixture' to replace the 1950s era one there now. A tender call was advertised last year but then cancelled but it IS coming - or so I have been told.

Anyone else disappointed with VIA's new concourse seating? It's better than the mishmash of types of seating they had before, but still... I was expecting integrated electrical outlets or USB outlets for charging

I believe the idea was to not encourage the residence impaired to view the VIA concourse as a place to sleep. If you make things too comfortable, people will start to camp out there. The station encountered this problem with the original wooden benches which led to the metal seating we have today. Yes the seating in the Great Hall is/was uncomfortable but it was designed to be.

As most (all?) VIA trains now have reserved seating the need to hang around at the departure gates is much reduced and I am not sure whether they will install USB charging ports etc in some of the (still blocked-off) alcoves. They seem to be installing lots of wall boxes in them.

MM44.74

Permit for Temporary Public Road Allowance Encroachment: 65 Front Street West at Union Station - by Councillor Lucy Troisi, seconded by Councillor Paul Ainslie
* This Motion has been deemed urgent by the Chair.
* This Motion is not subject to a vote to waive referral. This Motion has been added to the agenda and is before Council for debate.

Recommendations

Councillor Lucy Troisi, seconded by Councillor Paul Ainslie, recommends that;

1. City Council direct Transportation Services to issue the necessary permits under Chapter 743 of the City of Toronto Municipal Code to allow for the construction of the temporary encroachment within the public road allowance adjacent to Sir John A. MacDonald Plaza at 65 Front Street West for the period beginning August 27, 2018 and concluding October 7, 2018.

Summary
A permit is required to allow for a temporary installation that encroaches 3.5 meters into the public road allowance adjacent to Sir John A. MacDonald Plaza at Union Station (65 Front Street West). The permit is required for the period beginning August 27th, 2018 and concluding October 7, 2018.

The installation called "Time Capsule" is a travelling international design exhibition presented by Louis Vuitton, with Toronto as the only Canadian location. The installation is also being presented in Hong Kong, Bangkok, Dubai, Berlin, Singapore, Shanghai, Melbourne, Madrid and Los Angeles. The event is free to the public and will help to promote Union Station as a destination for events, culture and retail in the City. The installation is being managed by the station's Head Lessee Osmington (Union Station) Inc. as part of its management of retail, special events and cultural offerings at Union Station.

Osmington will be required to ensure that the activation does not create any hazard or inference and will not impede pedestrian movement, sight lines, or vehicular traffic and is AODA compliant. The majority of the installation will be placed within the property line of Sir John A. MacDonald Plaza (11 m) with less than one quarter of the installation in the public road allowance (3.5 m).

This Motion is urgent as this installation is related to a Union Station destination event and will be implemented before the next City Council Meeting.
