It's amazing to me that they can so radically rework this building.

And visible bracing/support seems to be the latest architectural trend in Toronto.
 
Some photos of the removal of the old cladding from inside 480 University. It's a really interesting process, looks like a custom-built hydraulic clamp that clasps onto the removed section of cladding.

Some photos of the removal of the old cladding from inside 480 University. It's a really interesting process, looks like a custom-built hydraulic clamp that clasps onto the removed section of cladding.

The hydraulics are only for adjusting the centre of gravity (CG) for the crane pick up point. That way the tool can be brought in level and attached to the fascia. Then for removal the CG is adjusted for the weight of the load so that when the fascia is detached from the building the load is balanced and remains level.

Was this yellow-claw-concrete-picker-thingy custom made for removing this particular concrete skin?

Yes it was custom made for this specific job. There's another part of the tool specifically for the corner sections as well.
