Maybe Holt Renfrew, Harry Rosen, Chanel, etc. should build closer to their customers, instead of relying on customers driving into the downtown to visit them?

Wherever high end stores build. their customers are going to drive. not walk or take public transit, so there will need to be ample parking. And if businesses relocate out of the city, who's going to want to live in or visit the city?

You're 100% correct. This is a case of some people still having 1950s auto centric ideas about cities. Build neighbourhoods for the people who live there not people 5-20km away who want to bring 3,500 lbs of glass, metal, plastic, and rubber with them. If they insist, they can Uber, take a taxi, or have their chauffeur drop them off .... on a side street.

That's like disputing the weight of an elephant by saying it weighs far less on the moon. There are a considerable number of differences between North America and Europe, and things are as they are because at least for the time being, things are wanted this way, or are the most practical or fit into the local scheme of things. The fact that someplace entirely different in culture, climate, tradition, history, etc. has things a certain way is next to irreverent.
