Lots of us disagree with ssiguy2 on that assessment, but different opinions are allowed.

Chop off the grey spandrel portion and it's not so bad.

It's not just about the grey spandrel, but also the smoky black tinted mobster glass, the mcmansion-style schlocky fauxstoric details of the precast/lighting/balcony railings/brick/facade, the crude manner it meets the corner, the lack of any real design direction here. Translation: it's a parts bin building picked out of an aisle at Home Depot.

Think I just like cold calculated modernism? Think again: Palais am Brandenburger Tor, Berlin by Langhof is my current favourite building. The details are there, it's original, unique and indeed handsome!

Call me humourless, but I find the Palais (linked above) to be ill suited to its site, being too opulent, too glitzy for its location across from the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, trivializing it. Major fail as far as I'm concerned. Interesting building, very wrong place.

re: Palais am Brandenburger Tor - interesting building, I like the proportions, but you can bet if it were proposed anywhere here, there would be howls of outrage from many in T.O.....gauche, too glitzy, omg look at the mullions, McMansion condo, etc., etc...

Actually I think it would look great off Roncesvalles somewhere...

/Berczy started out great, but ended up off track.....

That building is pure Yorkville for the glitziness. It would look better in the Bridle Path than a building like this.
