Ithought the cranes normally rose up through an elevator shaft.

Not generally. Tower cranes are normally in place long after the building has been topped off, hoisting the rooftop mechanical equipment, etc If the crane was based in the elevator shaft, then no top level elevator installation work could be started until the crane was removed, and the opening sealed up - would really delay availability of the elevators.

chutes?

No. The voids in the floor left by the crane are filled in after the crane is moved higher through the building. We've covered this in some front page stories.

Cautiously optimistic about the curtain wall. I think the podium has the most potential and is still the most compelling aspect of this project. Still lamenting the loss of that fantastic view of ICE from the islands.

My unit at Luna Vista was one of the ones the crane went through. When I moved in, you could tell that was the case as the ceiling was patched poorly, and you could actually make out the lines from the edges of the hole. It ended up being fixed after submitting my Tarion warranty form though.
