Thanks kwl.

OT - looking at that first pic, it's clear that we need a better trainshed - one with a roof that's as tall as the East and West wing would be a good start...

How can we have so quickly granted this thing Heritage status, thereby blocking any serious effort at redevelopment? Sure we have seen some interesting renders, but these pale in comparison to the efforts of our own Wiliepoon who provided several of his own 'visions' in the Union Station thread. I rarely argue for the 'bulldoze and rebuild' method, but I truly believe that this beast needs to go.

Not to go off topic here or anything ;), but the trainshed should be completely replaced and by something airy, clear and well designed - and when I mean completely, I don't mean only a portion of the floating canopy, but the entire length, as it is today.

KWL, thanks a lot for the great angles of these projects..Looking forward to further posts.

I wouldn't even mind this:

Whatever happened to that design anyway? Is it being built?

Whatever proposal is in the image above, it looks awesome, and exactly the type of thing that would make Union Station even more stunning.

/\ Sure the render looks great, but what it doesn't tell you is that this light, airy expansion will only cover a small, central portion of the overall shed.

I think that Kristopher's comment is indicative of how Torontonians, both politicians and residents alike, look at many issues in the city at large. The fact that we are being fed and are accepting a subpar quarter-chicken dinner solution to something that really requires a full revamp and which should replace the trainshed in its entirety, goes to show you just how lowly we truly feel about ourselves. We almost never get a decent solution proposed, because most developers/interested parties know that half-assed will do. And if that is the case, then we only deserve half-assed solutions and nothing more.

That's the one they're supposed to be building. I seem to remember reading that work won't start until the new south platform in finished and in service.

Does the remaining Bush shed actually look bad in that rendering? I actually find it to be intriguing counterpoint--and superior in effect to what the ACC did to the Postal Delivery building...

They may stand in contrast to one another, but have you seen the trainshed lately? Contrast or not, they would spend a fortune to refurbish the bush-shed, in order to get it remotely close to the way it looks in the rendering, let alone construct the new elements. So don't imagine they would do that- no to mention I believe it is an unintentional contextual contrast.

I peeked in there last week; it looks ravaged but rich, atmospheric, and fascinating. I wouldn't be opposed to its refurbishment.

I like the Bush just like I like bush. Unwaxed, musty, dense, intricate 70s-porn stuff...

Edit: What's with UT decapitalizing what I've written?

Well the mix of the floating glass (or whatever material that is), with the other roof, could actually be kind of cool.
And as far as I know this isn't actually half assed, as the old roof would still be replaced. It's not just a cut out of what we currently have, and then some glass put over it instead. At least I believe that's what I recall.
