They removed a 'representative section' of the 'porcupine sewer' and it will be re-installed somewhere in new building. I think they had to give up on the glass floor idea.^ What ever happened to the historic brick sewer that was on the site? Did they remove it?
Not totally, the major hold-up and cost increases were caused by the fact that they had to do a detailed archaeological investigation and save some things like part of the 'porcupine drain' and that the first contractor (Bondfield) was unable to get insurance. The project had to be re-tendered and bids came in at a higher price.^^^ And wasn't this value-engineered to such an extreme that Richard Rogers threatened to walk away from the project entirely?
I think the sad saga goes something like:
*Project initially mis-budgeted
*Then cheapened to death to meet correct budget
*Then over budget again
*Requiring funds from other projects to be within budget
