Toronto St Lawrence Market North | 25.3m | 5s | City of Toronto | Rogers Stirk Harbour

...one thing this city is good at is "temporary" fences. Especially ones that seem to hang around a lifetime and a dog's age. /sigh

The cobblestone courtyard between the new Market and SL Hall has been re-cobbled - almost. Not clear what the problem was but let's hope it is not yet another charge against the City!

I just spent some time looking back in this thread; the initial (2009) schedule was:

Project Timeline
April 28, 2010 – Stage II submission deadline

May 2010 – Public exhibition of design submissions and review by jury members

June 2010 – Announcement of competition winner and report to City Council

Autumn 2010 – Completion of temporary market building at 125 The Esplanade and relocation of Farmers Market and Antique Market

Early 2011 – Construction on the new North Market building begins

2014 – Occupancy of the North Market building

The international competition winner was announced, by Mayor Miller, in June 2010. (I was there.)

City of Toronto to announce winner of St. Lawrence Market North Building Design Competition

Join Mayor David Miller, Councillor Pam McConnell (Ward 28 Toronto Centre-Rosedale) and the local St. Lawrence community as they officially reveal the winning design in the St. Lawrence Market North Building Design Competition.

This just in from the Market Manager:

"Regarding the north market.

• In the coming weeks, the new North Market building will be progressing through phased occupancy for City services

• The City is working with the contractor toward substantial performance.

• Building tenants will move into the North Market in phases through the fall starting in November and throughout the winter months.

• North Market programming and events are expected to begin in the early spring of 2025.

• Further details on a grand opening and farmers market related program will be communicated in the coming months."

I assume this means the Farmers will not be in until early 2025.

At least Union Station is useable
I am surprised that in a city that’s spent billions on flood plain mitigation in the Port lands, someone missed the part of Union renovations where it shouldn’t flood. Would be funny if it turns out North Market needed that antique drain after all

...not sure what this has to do with delay of opening St. Lawrence Market North here. But if it's case of priorities, The City has other levels of governments and interests involved with the Port Lands, Union Station, Eglinton Crosstown, etc. Where this project is mostly on them, to my understanding.

it's simply the frustration that so many people feel watching projects blow past their opening dates - with no firm dates in place for when any of those projects will be completed. They're all being worked on by different groups - yet none of them can give us a firm date

The opening of the SLM has nothing to do with any other level of government - the failure (or absence?) of project management is all on the City.

...that's what I was saying. So I assume I am being correct here.
