RBC Waterpark also has heated sidewalks, however only once or twice during the winter they had part of it heated. I even asked the security guys why the rest is not heated to melt the snow.

Just needs to be heated to +4°C, and only when it gets wet or snows. It's not a bathroom floor.
 
Has the City ever evaluated the costs of plowing and salting compared to the costs of heated roads? The capital costs would obviously be quite expensive, but the ongoing costs might be quite a bit lower because we won't have to pay for expensive human operators. There are also the economic benefits of not having to deal with winter related congestion.

However I wouldn't bet on it being cheaper. And with Toronto's projected winter temperature increase due to climate change, this system may not make sense in the long run.

The whole purpose of the heating system is to melt the snow and ice. They DID NOT use it except couple of times and only around the entrance.
 
April 25
Having a look a the whole road work on Sat, June 19 is going to be a very tight date for completion.

West of Spadina will not make it for that date. They are only forming the sidewalk for concrete and still have yet to dig up the sidewalk to Bathurst.

I see a number of planted trees have already been cut down and not surprised to see this. When I saw some of those trees last year, didn't expect they to last long as they were too young for there.

Bay Intersection will be done by this weekend.

York intersection work on the south side is near completion for pavers, but some road work to be done. Same goes for Simcoe area.

Everything west of Paw Paw is a problem area with a lot of brick work along the TTC ROW and bike path.

Looks like more trouble under Reese and Queens Quay stemming from a water main break back in February.

On the weekend of February 21, 2015, a City water main failed on Rees Street immediately north of Queens Quay. Based on the volumes of rushing water recorded during the event Management judged that the break may have undermined the newly constructed road and associated infrastructure. The water main break and visible damage to the road base was repaired by City of Toronto contractors on the night of February 24th. Toronto Water field supervisory crews advised that 15 m3 of unshrinkable fill was placed in the area of the repair to compensate for the voids created by the water flow under the road base slab.
Due to Management’s concerns regarding the structural integrity of the road and potential warranty issues, staff requested a coordination meeting with City Divisions (Engineering and Construction Services, Transportation, Toronto Water) to ascertain whether all parties were satisfied with the original repairs and remediation work undertaken on February 24th.
Waterfront Toronto and City staff have now met on several occasions to review this issue. Subsequent to the first meeting on April 7th, the City performed a video survey of the sanitary line under the Rees and Queens Quay intersection and have determined that a part of this sewer has collapsed due to the erosion of soil beneath the sewer.
Pursuant to the second meeting held on April 21st, it was agreed that the City will perform additional video surveys of other new and existing sewers in the area to determine if any further damage is evident. Concurrently Waterfront Toronto will conduct an investigation to attempt to determine the extent of undermining and voids under the Queens Quay road right-of way. Dependent on the results of these additional surveys a remediation and repair plan will be developed. Until the extent of damage and remedial work is determined it is not known whether the repairs can be completed in time for the Pan-Am Games or Redpath Waterfront Festival on June 19th. It is also not currently known whether the work can be deferred until after the games are over.
Management has notified and is coordinating with the Builder’s Risk Insurer for the project and is keeping the adjuster informed. Additional verbal updates will be provided at the May 4th Board meeting in order to keep the Board apprised on the status of this issue as it continues to be assessed.
 
Wow. That PDF really shows the incredible amount of work and co-ordination that went into all of this. It's going to look amazing. I just pray, pray, pray that the utilities don't start ripping it all up in the coming years to do work they couldn't complete before it was built. Can you imagine all the lovely brick work just being a patch job or asphalt and bricks after the utilities get done wrecking stuff the way they do to all newly completed projects in this city? Please let a decade pass before it all starts getting ruined.

But if the utilities rip things up to do their work, why aren't they required to return it to how it was before they ripped it up?

They should be, but they never ever do. They just do a crappy half-ass patch job and move on to destroy the next freshly paved street (let's see how long Richmond lasts.) Let's just hope it doesn't happen.
 
The city doesn't require it, I don't know why. A number of spots were dug up in our new sidewalks to do hydro repairs and now there are a whole bunch of asphalt patches. The councillor's office reports that hydro is not required to return the sidewalks to their original condition but that the city will do it at some point. Which probably means never. It's ridiculous, proper restoring should be required.
