Walked by today on my daily walks. They are well into interlocking all around the old firehouse.

I like the pavers.

Hmmm, checks notes..........Firehall Recreation Centre and Washroom open by Late Summer 2025...... looks up at pictures........ sigh.

And what are they digging for now on the north side of the orange bridge.

This is the high level plan for that area:

New bikeshare added by the parking lot.

And I think they are planning to rip up the sidewalk for a good stretch on the north side of Commissioners. Just a hunch though, nothing concrete.

I suspect they will be installing one of their 'permanent' fences in that block not digging up the sidewalk but I guess we will find out and at some point they are going to demolish this old 'shed". and they will need to protect the sidewalk at that time. (BTW Looking at older Streetview pictures of this area reminds one of how much has changed!!)

Yay to more bike share. Wish they did notifications of when these things get added or subtracted.

Can anyone speak to how the building will run throughout the year when it’s open? I imagine it’s got a better winter setup than say, the Cherry Beach bathrooms. Will something actually run out of it on a regular basis? Is it just going to be an empty office with bathrooms closed half of the year?

I’m always a little mystified at the office in Corktown Commons- but this is a substantial two stories. Maybe that TRCA_HQ guy who’s always putting birds in tubes/bags on IG can set up shop.

The Firehall is designated as a Recreation Centre and will run programming of some type, at some point. The building will be open year round so far as I know.

There will also be a second set of washrooms on the other side of Cherry where the restaurant will be..........at some point.

I'm working on planning the field trip for later this week, and for some reason Google Maps is not presenting the 72C bus as an option to get to the park. But Apple Maps and the TTC Trip planner do. Is there something I should know about the 72C on weekday mornings?

Perhaps TTC website would be a good place to check?

A few tidbits from the Waterfront Toronto Open House (these deal with both Ookwemin Minising and Quayside, but putting it all in here):

1. WT stated they expected first occupancy in Ookwemin Minising to be in 2031. Given that they've stated first occupancy in Quayside will also be in 2031, and that construction in Quayside will start by end of 2026, it seems construction must not be that far away in Ookwemin Minising.

2. The new pedestrian bridge is expected to start construction in 2026 and be completed in 2027.

3. The boardwalk along Parliament Slip (that connects to the pedestrian bridge) is expected to start construction in 2027 and be complete in 2028. How will people access the bridge then, you ask? Apparently the boardwalk will be partially open during the construction phase, so people will be able to access the bridge (wasn't clear but I suspect this means basically half the boardwalk will be a dirt trail while the other half is fenced off and being built, and then they'll swap).

4. There seems to be talk of putting a school in the waterfront "Cultural Centre" site in Quayside? Personally I hope this isn't the case - schools would be great, but it should go in the podium of one of the many planned buildings nearby. This site should be something special and something anyone can access (which a school is, rightfully, not accessible to just anyone).

5. There was no mention of Parliament Slip. Not clear if the announced plans there are still planned.

6. Sounds like WT is confident that government funding for the QQE LRT is coming.

7. The green track for the QQE LRT seems to have been scrapped (was told might be a chance of having it along the LRT track on south side of Ookwemin Minising, but seems unlikely to me). Was told there are a few design options still. Personally I hope it is anything but cement - would be wonderful to have red pavers or something to make it look like it's not just an extension of the road.

There was a lot reserved in Corktown for a school, but it was expropriated by Metrolinx for Ontario line construction, so maybe they've moved on beyond that plan and are looking at something else? It's also possible that they decided they need to draw up plans for another school, since the West Donlands school was forecasted to be oversubscribed basically the moment it opens. This document is a few years old, but highlights the school capacity issues in the area:

(But I agree with you, a standalone school building is probably not the best use of a Quayside block.)
