Toronto Ontario Place | ?m | ?s | Infrastructure ON

New pitch from Joe Berridge and Ken Tanenbaum for a different Ontario Place.

Also involves a new vision for Exhibition Place; includes retention of Cinesphere/Pods and moves the Ontario Science Centre to the Exhibition Grounds.

Nice to see the Ford Administration finally sticking it to those downtown elites... by moving a major cultural institution from the suburbs to downtown. Irony anyone?

This motion coming to Exhibition Place Board today:

Councillor Mark Grimes recommends that the Board of Governors of Exhibition Place recommend that:

1. City Council direct the City Manager to contact the Province of Ontario to urgently request that both governments work together to develop a strategy for jointly planning the future of Ontario Place and Exhibition Place in a collaborative, co-operative, and consultative manner with all stakeholders, including Exhibition Place; and

2. City Council direct the City Manager to include the following matters for consideration in developing the joint strategy:

a. The 2017-2019 Exhibition Place Strategic Plan;

b. The 2011 Festival Plaza Master Plan including a recommendation of a land bridge link between both sites with consideration of pedestrian flows and bicycle infrastructure;

c. Public transit initiatives, including the 2018 Waterfront Transit Network Plan;

d. Traffic congestion concerns and the impact of major event management on congestion for the sites and residential communities;

e. Utility infrastructure capacities for both Ontario Place and Exhibition Place taking into consideration future development potential; and

f. Cooperative approaches to operating efficiencies for both sites, including operating and maintenance services.

3. City Council request the City Manager to report to the Executive Committee on the progress of Recommendations 1 and 2.

4. City Council request the City Manager to update the Board of Governors of Exhibition Place on the progress of Recommendations 1 and 2, on a regular basis.

Ontario Place advocates wary of Doug Ford’s transit plan

With a subway added, Exhibition GO station effectively becomes “Union Station west,” said Tanenbaum

I think the "Union Station ____" is being a bit played out. For starters the Union concept sort of implies there's only one. Also we already have a touted Union Station West at Pearson, then perhaps a Union East in some proposal I'm sure, then Markham's dusty Union Station North theme park thing. Definitely merit to intercepting GO riders, especially to relieve Union. But the map is just a doodle. If anything I think the true interception point would be around Bathurst. But then again hard to tell from the map since it's all so vague.

“The extraordinary thing about all this is a city the size of Toronto suddenly given nothing to say about its own transit system,” said Greenberg, referring to Ford’s refusal to share planning details.
“This is unheard of in the world today. The mayor’s not being briefed. The feds aren’t being briefed. We don’t know the (rail) technology.

This is the real takeaway of the article, and something a lot of people are seemingly oblivious to.

I thought they are planning a GO station at Front and Spadina. How realistic would it be to have a station there to connect with this GO station instead of the one listed at King and Bathurst?

He [Stephen Diamond of Diamond Corp] has partnered with another development powerhouse, Ken Tanenbaum, vice-chair of Kilmer Van Nostrand. He is part of a group that wants to see a convention centre and relocated Ontario Science Centre at Exhibition Place and Ontario Place.
