Re: Residences of Maple Leaf Square - Update/Retail

You can really see how MLSE has become a real estate corporation posing as a sports properties owner. The sports properites are just content for the important stuff, and provide brand equity for the real estate.

Not really. What more can they do real estate wise once this project is done and completely sold for condos?

Re: Residences of Maple Leaf Square - Update/Retail

Miami and Dallas have somewhat similar schemes. I also believe the New Jersey Nets has a large multi-use, multi-tower complex planned for their move to Brooklyn.

It's all about building the brand.

Re: Residences of Maple Leaf Square - Update/Retail

Is it the New Jersey proposal that has a Gehry design?

Re: Residences of Maple Leaf Square - Update/Retail

Quite a controversial one, in fact. Greeted with total hysteria by Brooklyn NIMBYs...who, for the record, are as bad or worse as anything TO has to offer.

Office podium on top of the Ricoh Centre (with govt. contribution to the costs); several residential floors on top of the Etobicoke property to be marketed to sports fans (with govt. contribution to the costs); redevelop St. Mike's Arena as the new, urgently needed, practice facility (with govt. ... ).

Take over the Hershey Centre (or maybe just take over Hershey's, with govt. ... )

All it takes is a little imagination.

"You can really see how MLSE has become a real estate corporation posing as a sports properties owner. "

if need be, wouldn't it make more sense the other way around - a real estate rich pension fund posing as a sports franchise owner

Re: Residences of Maple Leaf Square - Update/Retail

true ^teachers pension is getting mlse to do all the dirty work

Re: Residences of Maple Leaf Square - Update/Retail

I realy hope they get the House of Blues in the podium. This will really be another must see are when it is done.

Re: Residences of Maple Leaf Square - Update/Retail

Given the Aykroyd (or Downchild/Blues Brothers) connection, I'm kind of surprised there *hasn't* been a Toronto House of Blues yet--heck, I'm surprised one didn't open up back in the 90s...

Re: Residences of Maple Leaf Square - Update/Retail

Has anyone gone by the site? Has it started?

Re: Residences of Maple Leaf Square - Update/Retail

On Saturday the parking was still in use by the ACC.

Re: Residences of Maple Leaf Square - Update/Retail

The House of Blues is a US based franchise- despite Akroyd's involvement- "Locations: Cleveland, Ohio; Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; San Diego, California; Chicago, Illinois; New Orleans, Louisiana; Los Angeles, California; two venues on casino property including Las Vegas, Nevada (at Mandalay Bay) and Atlantic City, New Jersey (at the Showboat Casino); two venues on Disney property, one at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida, and one at Disneyland in Anaheim, California. (Disney was at one time a partial shareholder, according to DisneyWar by James B. Stewart.)" - W-pedia

It would be nice to see Akroyd, with his significant pop-culture influence, doing something unique for Toronto.

Re: Residences of Maple Leaf Square - Update/Retail

The way Aykroyd been bashing Canada and our anti-business socialist ways, I don't think he's interested in invested outside the "land of opportunity".

Re: Residences of Maple Leaf Square - Update/Retail

Whaaaa? He's got a number of business interests in Canada. For one, he just bought a winery down here in Niagara.
