I figured the atrium would not be touched, but some parts from what I have read date back to the 40's and 50's or possibly earlier

Not the part you can see here - the University facing portion of the complex dates back to the 50s and will be demolished (along with the Hill Wing on Gerrard).

It won't be torn down but there will be extensive renovations to atrium in the last phase of the project.
