They are neither concrete nor tacky... but to each his own I suppose.

It's true that the maple leaf design is exceptional. It's a mosaic of granite setts in three colours--easily the most beautiful paving design in the city. It can hold its own with the granite paving mosaics for sidewalks and public squares that you can find in many European cities.

In fairness, paving in this city usually consists of mismatched sidewalks, pot holes and decade old gum stains. I don't doubt the craftsmanship, just seemed out of place.

They just finished a little park, north of the building, and it would seem they are closing the street to vehicular traffic?

What happened to the north building? Are they still planning to build it in the future?

They are doing some filming there this month so that might be why they're putting some stuff up/ closing off the road etc.

I believe I read somewhere (possibly this thread) that the north building was originally intended to be student residences, but was moved to the West Don Lands, and is now under construction.

SP!RE is right, the park and the road closure is all a film set.

I don't know if GBC has given up all rights to the north block where the student residence was to be - in other words, maybe someday they will get around to building one there - but for the time being, Chriskay is right: the planned residence is now being built instead in the West Don Lands.

Not my favourite but it came out OK...........Waterfront Campus Wins Toronto Best Project Award

The new Waterfront Campus at George Brown College has won a Best Project Award from Toronto Construction Association
The new Waterfront Campus at George Brown College in downtown Toronto was honoured with a 2012 project achievement award at the Toronto Construction Association’s 15th annual ‘Best of the Best’ Awards.

Handed out late last month at the association’s 145th annual meeting, the awards are part of an effort by the association to recognise outstanding building achievements.

Designed to LEED Gold standards through a joint venture between Stantec/Kuwabara Payne McKenna Blumberg architects, the campus emphasizes interprofessional team-based education. The 330,000 square foot campus features informal learning spaces, rooftop terraces, below grade parking, a nearby park and state-of-the-art classrooms and laboratories which overlook the Toronto harbour.

It seems that Daphne Cockwell, she of the new Ryerson Health Sciences building on Church Street, really got around. This building has been named after her too.
