I think they are actually calling it the Hamilton Arena until it gets a new corporate name

So Vancouver has Rogers Arena, which is an arena --- cool. Toronto has Rogers Centre, which is a stadium. But Scotiabank Arena, which is indeed an arena, was also once called a Centre (Air Canada Centre). Edmonton has Rogers Place, which is an arena.

Arena is a good and specific description. Centre is technically accurate, but it could more or less mean any building or gathering spot, arena or stadium or otherwise. Place is technically accurate, but could mean any location anywhere in the universe.

"Stage" is the one that strikes me as being increasingly used inaccurately. It makes sense for a temporary outdoor stage at some kind of festival. But it doesn't fit when applied to a permanent building with all of its seating, as in OLG Stage for the 5000-seat theatre at Fallsview, or Budweiser Stage for the amphitheatre at Ontario Place.
As I've mentioned here before, the venues at Rama, Pickering, and Woodbine, are all college-gymnasium or auditorium-like venues, with large flat floors in front of their stage, and retractable stands behind the floor, yet have inaccurately named them The Arena (Pickering) and The Theatre (Woodbine).

The tennis stadium at York University was called Centre for many years before becoming Stadium, although the name was for the entire complex which was more than just the stadium. And I suppose its sponsor name could be changing yet again if the grocery chain is phasing out that name, according to another thread.

I'm also excited about big name bands coming to Hamilton. They really need to address the issue of the, let's say, state of York Blvd here though. I hope the new owners put some serious pressure on the city to clean up the street and sidewalk and relocate the two social services in the area. I think they can come to an agreement that both better serves the shelter organizations, and also benefits the new entertainment district.

Agreed but it's not only that, the entire area has intrinsic negative appeal, largely due to the overall botched Jackson Square urban redevelopment project that has left the surroundings an urban wasteland.

No amount of lipstick on a pig (FirstOntario Place) is going to fix that IMO.
