Toronto Eglinton Line 5 Crosstown West Extension | ?m | ?s | Metrolinx

I hate the new way they’re naming stops. I really prefer just naming them after the two cross-streets. The streets are (mostly) on a grid so it would be quite helpful to know where you are.
In East Asia like Hong Kong, Taipei and Japan, they actually names their stations like ML is naming them based on neighbourhoods. Mainly cause they don't travel in a grid system on a single roadway.

Let me guess. “Willowridge”, “Princess Margaret”, “Richview”, “Westmount”, “Scarlet” and “Eglinton Flats”.
Very likely they'll be named after the neighbourhoods or old villages the stations are in (or lack of such). It's the deciding on which station would follow the neighbourhood that is the hard part.

The Canadian Open Golf Tournament will take place (allegedly) this year (2022) at St. George's Golf and Country Club (Islington & Eglinton) in Etobicoke. St. George is already taken.

Doug might be more comfortable commemorating the current and previous High Schools along the line where he made his start and developed his market share - Scarlett Heights, Richview, Kipling, Martin Grove, and Vincent Massey.

We sort of did with the University and some stations of the Spadina Line (at least local landmarks, which is a common practice). Honestly it isn't that big a deal - people adapt. My personal preference is minimizing overlapping names to avoid the possibility - however remote - of mixups.

Let me guess. “Willowridge”...

The station at Martin Grove should just be called Martin Grove and the Finch LRT surface stop be renamed "Smithfield" (still easy) as a "subway" station should have first crack at the cross street name.

Former Prime Minister Stephen Harper graduated from Richview Collegiate Institute (Eglinton & Islington) in 1978, and was a member of Richview Collegiate's team on Reach for the Top (used to hosted by Alex Trebek), a televised academic quiz show for high school students. Some Conservatives may lobby for renaming Richview Collegiate to Stephen Harper Collegiate Institute. Setting the stage for a future "Stephen Harper Station".

Eglinton & Kipling is Doug Ford's neighbourhood. They could name that station "Fordsville Station". See link.

Ford cancelled the DRL in favour of the Ontario Line, adding years to the project, assuming it gets built. He also cancelled the Hamilton LRT, and slowed down GO expansion and electrification. I don't think he has gotten more done than previous governments and he has had a generally anti-transit stance.
The Hamilton LRT line was never cancelled it was just a political power move to get adequate funding from the Feds. Minister McKenna (spelling is probably wrong) is originally from Hamilton and desperately wanted the Hamilton LRT during her term as Minister for Infrastructure so Ford was the smart one and cancelled it in order to get funding. Not sure why you would say that when everyone including their mom and dad knows this is what happened. (unless your making a joke or something that I didn't catch on to)

Also the OL is 1000% times better than the original DRL. We are going to get to Eglinton on the first shot by 2030 whereas it would have taken until the 2040s to get till Eglinton at the earliest.

To everyone that thinks that the Ford government is making a breakneck pace in transit development, it only seems to be the case because most of the planning work has been done under the Liberal government, the same government which enhanced the environmental assessment and consultation requirements to ensure that future projects are carried through in a responsible manner.

The only thing that Ford did was to make these laws ineffective by removing those requirements, as well as moving forward with most of the Liberal agenda which is now suddenly shovel-ready since theres no longer a legal responsibility.

This method of working may get projects done quicker, though there will be a much larger environmental cost to pay as climate change takes a better hold on this planet, especially considering all the additional highway construction that they’re trying to ram through with this legislation…

The Liberals however refuses to fund most of these projects. They only paid to do the studies for the Relief Line. They told TO to find your own Eg West surface LRT. They didn’t care about the Scarborough subway extension. Yonge North was still in the back burner.

They came up with the tactics of stalling the crosstown and spreading the work over 3 elections terms with the majority of the funds flowing through this term. They stalled the Finch LRT from the Mcgunity era in 2010 to this term.

They stalled the 410 extension in 3 phases over a decade. They stalled the 401 widening in multiple phases by tending 2 km sections every few years. It took them a very long time to even fund the 404 extension that was planned before 2000.

The liberals were all about stalling and delaying. Let the government 2 terms down the road pay for them. Clearly they weren’t keeping up with the population growth. Giving them 2 more years on environmental studies won’t get them funded.

One person’s “planning” is another person’s “making lavish promises and pretending”, I guess. There wasn’t much serious project launch preparation accomplished during the Liberal years. The serious design and engineering only began after Ford entered the scene. The Liberals were bald-faced liars about whether the whole plan was moving forward.

The thing that is choking the ML projects is a procurement model which deliberately removes line-of-sight accountability between politicians, senior Ministry officials, senior ML execs, and the work itself. If ML discovers (or only suspects, because the vendor isn’t obligated to disclose all that much) that schedules are slipping or work isn’t meeting spec, their only lever is to not pay on time, and trigger legal processes which mostly address cost claims. They cannot directly intervene or redirect to impose corrective action. Putting things into a litigation forum does nothing to get a project back on schedule or make changes to workflow. In fact, the lawyers will likely argue against taking corrective action as it indirectly admits fault.

ML needs much more direct controlof projects…. which implies also taking accountability. That will never happen, because the current model protects them and their masters from “blame”.

If the Liberals had built like this current Ford government, the entire Transit City would have been completed (for better or worse) before Ford entered office.

Not really. The only project that the PCs really retained was the Scarborough subway and even that they made substantial revisions to.

The OL, Eglinton West, and Yonge North are more or less greenfield new projects. Yonge North had a 10 year old EA completed, but it's actually the furthest behind in terms of construction start, and the project that will be built is substantially different than the one identified in the original EA.

In 4 years (really 3 since the projects were announced), Ford will have taken four separate subway lines from an idea to actual shovels in the ground. Only two of them had substantial previous environmental assessment work completed.

The Liberals talked big but quietly made sure cash flows for projects were very slow. They eventually got around to building most of their promises, but not nearly as quickly as they could have. Look at how ridiculously long they dragged Transit City out for. Finch West was announced for funding in, what, 2008? The EA was completed in 2009? Then a decade of... nothing... until they finally brought it out for procurement right before they lost power.

They talked big but their actual completed transit project list after 15 years in power is remarkably short. One subway line, an airport train, and 30-minute service on Lakeshore GO lines were their only major transit accomplishments in a decade and a half, with a handful of additional projects underway by the time they lost power.

They do have to be credited for the GO expansion program which is excellent, but it also crawled along for 3 years after project inception before they lost power. It was the one project the Liberals seemed interested in pushing forward with real effort.

I think it would be safer to wait until those shovels are actually in the ground though (and I hope they do go into the ground).
Why give the PCs the benefit of the doubt here?

Shovels are already in the ground for 2 out of the 4 projects, with OL and YN close behind. Of course the benefit of the doubt is granted because they have already displayed substantial progress. Its not like they just announced stuff and we're assuming they're going to do it.

I will never vote for Doug, but he has blown the Liberals away on the transit file. That a dimwit like Doug was able to turn the Ontario Line from nothing to reality within months illustrates how the DRL was never the huge priority it should have been for city council. Designating phase one to only reach Pape Stn was an embarrassment.
