Toronto Eastern Avenue Transit-Oriented Community | 44.4m | 11s | Infrastructure ON | SvN

Another government land sell-off that will likely come with a 0% affordable housing requirement or any other tangible/significant community benefit.

The degree to which the Conservative party is actively perpetuating the housing problems in this province never ceases to amaze.

It doesn't matter. Even if all new buildings had a percentage of units reserved for affordable housing, it still would not be enough to put a dent in the market and make prices more affordable for all. No government will have the balls to do what is necessary to actually make a difference.

^Well then, I suppose the solution is to build no affordable housing anywhere, because according to that methodology what's the point right?
I'm just saying it's easy to shit on the conservatives but in reality no party in charge could or would fix the situation. We certainly need to build more affordable housing but it's Toronto. The city will never be affordable to everyone. Do you expect New York or San Francisco to ever become affordable?

^It's easy to dump on them, because they do the exact reverse of everything that's needed to make housing affordable and with their policies they are making the problem magnitudes worse. This isnt just a problem of them doing nothing (because they aren't), it's also problem of them knowingly literally making things even more unaffordable and putting on face like they care.

Look at all the TOC's released today for instance and I guarantee you that not one of them will require an affordable housing component. Count the number of sites that Metrolinx/IO are looking to develop and dispose of and not one of them have had this requirement since Ford's government took office.

All it takes is for them to add in a couple lines requiring affordable housing being a component of any land acquisition, it doesn't cost the provincial government a cent to do. But because they dont care about the issue and would rather line the pockets of developers, they actively choose not to. That's hundreds of affordable units being pissed away because the Ford government doesn't feel like addressing the issue when they can.

The proposed Eastern Avenue TOC, located near the future East Harbour Transit Hub, would create approximately 140 new residential units, including affordable housing, while also increasing employment opportunities. The proposed TOC would provide convenient pedestrian and cyclist access to the future East Harbour Transit Hub. This new SmartTrack GO Station and interchange station will support GO Trains, the Ontario Line, and future TTC Light Rail Transit, connecting thousands of daily commuters to downtown and across the Greater Toronto Area.

You have the right to speculate, but if you click into the link on the page:
"The Thorncliffe Park site consists of three sites which have been designated for TOC use. These sites will be developed in line with the stated objectives of the TOC program."

under "Transit-Oriented Communities Program", it mentions "affordable housing".

As with anything with any government (especially the Ford government) dont believe any blanket statement like this until pen is signed to paper, and contracts are formally signed.

It's true no city will ever be affordable to every single person, but that's a red herring. Compare Toronto real estate prices to many other major cities and it is obvious policies make a difference. This problem is not a giant mystery that can never be solved.
