From the Metrolinx Board Meeting docs. Not a First Gulf update but it looks like the station here is moving forward, as it is an integral part of the development. I wonder if First Gulf is contributing to building the station as per the PC's "Transit Oriented Development/Private Sector" approach to new stations?
They have said that they intend to. (I believe they want some architectural control over the station.)

That's probably a good thing, it means we will have a good looking station rather than a bland one (hopefully). I get the current design in First Gulf renderings is a placeholder, but I'd love it if the final product looked similar to the renderings, including a full-station canopy that isn't awful like Union's.

Yes! That curved cylindrical train shed is beautiful! Similar to the Berlin central station

It would take a wholesale reevaluation of Canadian attitudes towards transportation in general and rail transportation specifically for anything that grand to even be considered. Buildings like that happen out a national consciousness, not a developer desire to link an outlying project to the core of a single city.

Still, yes, aspire is certainly the right word!

Transit should be seen as a utility. We don’t hear people talking about where water mains, hydro poles, or substations should go. We let the city planners and engineers do research on what’s needed when and let them do their jobs. If sewage was debated over like our transit system we’d have shit overflowing everywhere, which is basically what we have right now with transit.

Sorry to bring this off topic.

Anyone who was planning to attend the East Harbour Community Open House this evening should make new plans: due to weather, the event will be postponed, with a new date to come later.

Modern Canadian attitudes, certainly. In which decade did Canada turn its face against quality in public architecture? The same dismal trend can be seen elsewhere in the Anglosphere, of course.

One does wonder if Metrolinx and the City (and the heritage folks) fear that a grand East Harbour would lead to calls for the Union shed to be revisited.

Was it was from the late 60s onward, when modernism was declared to have "failed" and governments still needed make everything look as cheap and utilitarian as possible so nobody could accuse them of mismanaging public funds?

Nothing to do with failures of architectural trends, more to do with the emergence of Neo-Liberalism coupled with high labour and building costs.

This is good news. This bridge along with the old Eastern Ave Bridge are eyesores over the lower Don River.
The story does not say that the bridge will be removed, just the pipeline on it.
