Just noticed the single pink umbrella on the rooftop patio today. Looks kinda out of place and lonely. Or not. Not sure how to feel about it yet.

Toronto historically has been a strategic port. But, volume of shipped tonnage is lower now than 40-50 years ago. In the 60s/70s Toronto recieved about 6 million tons of cargo. Today it’s just over 2. In 2017, it was 2.2, highest since 2005.
Vancouver, Canada’s busiest port handles 60-70 million tons per year.
For 6 million tons, Toronto employed about 2500 people, today it is less.
For Toronto, port volume is sugar cane, road salt, and cement, for the top three. Direct employment is small, tertiary employment is likely a bit more, but easily 1/3 of 1970.
Ideally today any land development will have a greater impact than the port of the past on employment.
