Toronto CrystalBlu Condos | ?m | 36s | Bazis | Burka

. Condo marketing has become a joke IMO. The end product has nothing to do with the marketing campaign. No matter how they market these things, in the end most seem to be boring boxes raising up into the sky. Be sure to see thru this when you go to presentation centers.

I'm still wating to see the Double Decker buses pull up at London Calling (on the Esplanade) to take people to work.

As I was walking up Yonge today towards Bloor I thought, wow, Crystal Blu sure looks great. Its exciting to see two new developments side by side. They both really put the nearby Russian gulag-type architecture to shame. Then I thought...I wonder why some sourpusses feel the need to log on to their computers and write silly things about these buildings? They are a welcome part of what one might hope would be a renewal of the area south of Bloor.

Hendrix, while I agree that the two projects are decent enough, that "Russian gulag-type architecture" (I assume you're referring to Manulife Centre) kicks the crap out of both of them.

Unless he's referring to the the sister student-rez towers to the south (the Charles Promenade one and the Okonomi House one)

I'm referring to the Manulife Centre as well as the grotesque apartments in the surrounding area. I think the Manulife Centre is hideous, like a lot of the concrete bunkers in the area.

It would be appreciated if you would kindly direct me to the excerpt in which any architect attests to the inherent beauty of the Manulife, the Cumberland Terrace, that eyesore at the north west corner of Bay and Bloor, or any of those brown buildings on Charles St. Please do enlighten me.

forget "the Cumberland Terrace, that eyesore at the north west corner of Bay and Bloor, or any of those brown buildings on Charles St"--they are all crap. Concentrate your attention on the Manulife. Try to see the difference. Don't post again until you see the difference.

A quote from one of your links:

Will Concrete Toronto ever make you love the Manulife Centre or the Gardiner Expressway? It's doubtful.

Try to see how you contradict yourself. Don't post again until you see how. Arrogant twit.

I love the Manulife Centre. The architecture and proportions make it a bold, rigid, and powerful building with a sense of permanence. Mechanical floors are skillfully incorporated into the architecture, breaking up the grid of windows. The roof of the tallest tower nicely resolves the structure with a sense of lightness. The closest thing to Stalinism in the immediate area would probably be Uptown Residences.

Manulife is appalling at street level though, particularly the charles and balmuto sides.

my only real beef with it is the cantilevered pomo entrance added in a 'bid for relevance' in the 1980's. materials are off, colours don't match, employs dreaded ziggurat form....
