What Work is Taking Place?

With shoring activities nearing completion, the traffic configuration in the Yonge-Eglinton area will change to accommodate upcoming deep excavation work. This work will include excavating to the bottom of the future station box (approximately 22 meters at the deepest point).


Hours of Work

  • The traffic configuration is expected to begin as early as February 2019 for approximately 12 months.
  • Deep excavation work is expected to begin beforehand in mid-December and last for approximately 12-16 months.
  • In order to maintain schedule, excavation work will begin as early as 4:00 a.m. Monday – Saturday as early as January 2, 2019.
  • Additional overnight work may be required. Metrolinx will notify the public in advance and monitor activities throughout. Work may be rescheduled due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances.

    Traffic and Pedestrian Changes
    • All four crosswalks at the Yonge-Eglinton intersection will be open during this stage.
    • Eglinton Avenue will remain as one lane in each direction between Duplex Avenue and Dunfield Avenue.
    • Yonge Street will open up to two lanes in each direction at Eglinton Avenue.
    • Bike lanes will be added on Eglinton Avenue from Duplex Avenue to Dunfield Avenue.
    • Holly Street will re-open for this stage.
    • Cowbell Lane will remain closed.
    • All turn restrictions at the Yonge-Eglinton intersection will remain.

      What to Expect

    • Nearby residents and businesses can expect noise in the area caused by an excavator, crane, loaders, trucks and other construction equipment, as well as dust from drilling activity and debris removal.
    • Existing approved haul routes will be used (Duplex Avenue to Eglinton Avenue and Cowbell Lane to Soudan Avenue to Yonge Street).
    • Increased truck traffic to and from the old TTC bus depot and Salvation Army sites.
    • For safety purposes, fencing will be erected around the work zone.
    • All access to businesses is maintained throughout the stages.

      Noise Mitigation Efforts for Early Morning Works

      Training and controls for staff to reduce the noise produce by equipment including:

    • White noise/broadband back-up alarms on all trucks and equipment.
    • Loading soil only into the trucks (no large debris or rocks that would create banging noises).
    • Avoiding shaking of the excavator buckets.
    • Lowering the drop height so soil/debris falls closer to the truck bed.
    • Securing tailgates on trucks to limit banging noise.
    • Limiting acceleration of the trucks as they ingress/egress.
    • Turning off truck engines while they wait or are staging.
 
that is a much reduced traffic impact - yonge being restored to 2 lanes each way and all pedestrian crossings re-opening.. that's great news.
 
Yonge opening up will make life a lot better in the area. Traffic up Duplex in the morning has been crazy the last few years.

I am also wondering what is happening at 7 Eglinton Ave. E. which is a deepening hole in the ground now. Is that (fingers crossed) going to be another entrance to Line 5 & 1?

What Work is Taking Place?

With support of excavation works nearly complete, crews have begun deep excavation under the traffic decking to open up the station box area for construction. The next major work will be underpinning the TTC’s Line 1 Eglinton Station subway box. In order to excavate the area adjacent the TTC box, crews will need to occupy the northwest corner of the Yonge-Eglinton intersection (as depicted below). The north-south crosswalk on the west side of the Yonge-Eglinton intersection will close for the duration of this stage.

But we never got the arrangement indicated in post #202?
Closing the west crossing is the worst!
